"Once you contribute they got your name in their database and they will constantly barrage you with postal mail and phone calls. I get postal mail from the RNC almost every day. It's sickening"

oh please, it isn't ((sickening)). Stop over reacting. All you have to do is throw it in the trash or recycle the paper if it has any blank sides for note paper or notify them to take your name off their list. You can't have it both ways. This is a very important time and they, as expected by us are doing their job.

You know, I've gotten several very pushy calls from Bush/Cheney. Very pushy. I donate through the materials they send me, not over the phone. One day I got stuff in the mail. I sat down at my computer and got an e-mail request. While I was reading the e-mail, I got a Bush/Cheney phone call wanting money. I told him I had the literature. He kept pushing. I finally got so mad that I said, "I obviously don't have enough money for you folks, so just leave me alone" and hung up. Three requests for money in 5 minutes really ticked me off, and I almost wrote a complaint letter.

Now I'm wondering if these annoying, pushy calls are even legit.

I'm very familiar with nearly (if not) all of the call scripts and this one doesn't pass the stink test.

Folks, if you ever have any doubt, ask the caller for a number where they can be reached. If the call is legit (or the scammer savvy) the caller will give you a victory center number or a campaign toll-free line. If the scammer hasn't thought that far in advance, they'll just hang up.

"The reason it may say out of area on your caller ID is because the phone banks are likley to be in Washington DC, as on my caller ID it always comes up a 202 area code, which is DC."

I hate to be cynical but don't you think scam artists are located in DC too. I've donated plenty to the RNC via their mailings and I have NEVER gotten a phone call from them pressure asking for my credit card number.

It is quite sickening. I understand calling me once for money, or sending me something now and then, but I get stuff almost every day!

I bet they spent more money on postage already than I contributed to begin with. It's ridiculous for me to get two sometimes three pieces of postal mail from them PER WEEK for the last FEW MONTHS. That in addition to near weekly phone calls. It borders on harrassment.

And I did tell them repeadetly that I will not contribute any more this election cycle. But that's no deterrent to them. I am not going to contribute to a major campaign ever again until the party gets its mailings under control.

If any of you have doubts all you have to do is get the persons name, phone number and verify it through your local offices or look up the "legit" contact addresses and phone numbers on the net. Or ask your local library for the same contact info. That's what the reference desk is there for, answering your questions. They enjoy it otherwise they're bored stiff.

You could be right; although I gave him the opportunity to send me info via US mail. He,instead, continued requesting my card number and asking for smaller donations.

I just sent an email to campaign headquarters and will wait to see what their response is.

I would say it definately wasn't the Bush campaign and even as rotten as Kerry's bunch is, I would bet the ranch it wasn't them either

You were contacted by a scam artist.

Yep sounds like a phone scam. Particulary senior citizens beware. My poor mother inlaw was a constant bullseye for these parasites.

Yeah, thats a common tactic (to ask for smaller donations). As a person who is in sales and has some experience, the key is to always get the money right away. They know that they have a much greater chance (and lower cost) of asking for a smaller donation over the phone than sending out postal mail and having it tossed aside.

This is why they always give you a few options in lower increments to donate first before they settle for sending you postal mail.

There's really a limit to how much people can take though, and I don't appreciate the RNC sending me so many fundraising letters in the mail so often.

I also got a call from Bush/Cheney HQ. It was an invite to a fundraiser/party and the caller ID said " PA GOP"

Do you have a caller ID?

My standard telephone response is "I'm sorry we don't accept telephone solicitations." I hang up while the telemarker is trying to figure out what I mean. But I find it hard to be rude to the Bush/Cheney campaign. :^)

Now that I suspect that some of the calls are bogus, I'll call someone if I get another one.

Please note that my irritation was because I received three solicitations within 5 minutes and the caller would not take "No."

Bush is the man! Cheney is the other man!

It might even be a caller from the DNC, moveon, ACT, etc.

As I said, my caller ID said it was a 800 number. I just tried to call the number back and some guy answered "RMA"

Strange.

Yep. That's what the guy who called me did. Only my call was a while back. Most of the solicitations I get are mail, and although I think they spend too much money on stamps and photos, they are fine. I can't send much or often, but I have been donating since Gore tried to steal Florida.

I would call the operator and have them trace that call immediately.

Doesn't seem right. Maybe you should report it to the local PD and phone company.

He asked my for my email address and said I could give it online to an address he would send me.

Definitely a scam. There's no need for that. All he would have said was visit www.georgewbush.com. No need to ask you for an e-mail address to send you a specific site.

As I said before, contact your operator to get this number traced...then report this to authorities.

I make calls for Bush/Cheney and that isn't how it's done. Besides that, when I called home with their phone # it comes up Republican National Committee
