So you go to your local gun shop, tell him what you want or have him help you decide (get a DSA catalog and start browsing), you give him money, he'll order it, sometime later he'll receive it, you'll fill out a form 4473 (BATFE firearms sale form), you'll get a NICS background check run which takes about five minutes, pay him his remaining fees and that should be that.

Another approach is to go to a dealer and ask (will you receive a mail-order rifle? What is your fee? Then order from DSA directly.

Then again, DSA may offer dealer pricing that enables your dealer to make a profit without charging you a fee above what you would have paid the factory. Some dealers will do this for 10% or so over cost (usually small low-overhead operation.)

But it bears repeating that the BEST way to buy ANY gun, especially one of a type that the antis most want to ban, is in a PRIVATE sale. Most states allow these, some don't. And it must be from someone who is a resident of your own state. But there is NO paperwork or background, check, so when it gets banned, there is no worry that they will come for you if you decide not to turn it in.

You could always get an AK-47, at least the semi-auto version.

I love Bushmaster's AR15s, but if I go with an AR-10, I'll do an Armalite, since they've been building them for longer.

Also, I'm not sure if the BM 308s have chrome lined barrels or not. Armalites do.

Read the $28 book that spends hundreds of pages with useful data and analysis on precisely this very question. http://javelinpress.com/bostons_gun_bible.html

I've read it, why is one reason I'm leaning towards the M1A right now.

I just got done with "Molon Labe", which is the latest from Boston, and I thought it was great. Have you read it?

M1A and or M14

Hard to improve upon perfection.

The M1A IMHO is a much better rig, accuracy and reliability either muddy or shiny clean it'll go bang every time. magazines are once again cheap for it and ya can't go wrong.

I'm really starting to lean that way.... M1A is my frontrunner now.

If ya get an M4 Carbine I suggest Bushmasters new rig that is AWB virus free

That's what I'm in the process of building right now. 14.5" M4 barrel with Phantom FS. VLTOR folding stock, Knights RAS II free float rail, Tango Down battle grip, PRI front flip-up sight, ARMS #40 rear flip-up sight, Aimpoint, Specter Gear sling, and Surefire tailcap-activated 120 lumen light.

That's going to be one cool rifle. Can't wait to get her finished!

The M1A platform is a no s*** 1000 yard platform when properly set up.

I want a precision rifle too, and I was going to get a Rem 700 in 308, but if the M1A is *that* good, maybe I'll just the Scout model with an Aimpoint for CQB, and then setup a long range rifle with a Leopuld or better scope.

That way, I'll have two rifles that have the same manual of arms, and if one went down, I'd still have a backup.

The ".223 vs .308" discussion is a religious war. :-)

Both serve a purpose. I do plan to keep my 5.56 stuff, and am even in the process of building another AR-15 right now.

But some possible scenarios in the future could require something in .308

I love the 5.56mm for CQB, but a .308 gives you the capability to 'reach out and touch someone'.

I've skinned the cat in a slightly different manner, but your solution would work equally well.

I've set up an AR (Rock River) A4 model with an Aimpoint Comp optical system. It's the bees knees out to 300 meters or so. If you know your ballistics damn near every shot's a winner.

For longer range work, I have the NM M1A set up with a Gen 2 mount from Springfield and their excellent 2nd Generation rangefinding scope. That scope was pricey, but it's clear as a bell and pre-calibrated for .308 match ammo.

I like the Springfield scope, but a buddy of mine has his topped with the Leopold LE model. That's another really good choice IMO. Either one should serve you very well.

I'm glad to see you're leaning towards the Springfield. If you are interested in having a battle rifle that can also do some serious long range work I don't think you can do much better.

The FN is a great platform, don't get me wrong. I just don't think it's got the inherent long range capabilities that the M1A does.

One other good thing is that the price on M1A mags seems to have dropped about 75% since the AWB died. Parkerized imports are running about 17.00 US or so. That's much better than the 60-70 dollar prices I saw earlier this year.

Have fun with whatever you chose.

I do. I just picked up 5,000 Lake City Match 7.62 cases.

I'll be spending some time at the press, but every single one is going to be hand made match grade 168 grain BTHP.

There's nothing like rolling your own.
