This has less to do with motorist convenience and has more to do with $$$ for the city.

True enough. Which is why my vehicle is well-maintained and insured.

Which isn't to say I have the right to come to a full-stop in the middle of rush-hour and change my tire right there in the lane.

Don't forget beading needles. They're useful weapons as well.

I expect to see "Corleone Family Towing" rollbacks running all over Houston after this.

Here in South Carolina, we raise rubbernecking to a fine art. I have seen a minor fender-bender off on the shoulder of a southbound highway bring the northbound side of the highway to a halt for one mile, simply with people slowing down to look at all the pretty blue and yellow flashing lights.

submit the reciept to your insurance company

Then watch your insurance company drop your road side assistance portion of your insurance because you submitted it for a claim.

Mine just did that to me.

(sigh)

Oh yes, I don't remember as a taxpayer voting for this alledged new law?

Well, technically, under our republican form of government, you (since you aren't an elected official) aren't supposed to vote for each law that comes up. :-)

Ain't government mandated insurance grand??? Those of us that are responsible would have had it whether the law said to or not. Those that aren't responsible types didn't before and still don't now.

Be nice if they instituted that policy in the NY/NJ metro area.

I am from Houston and I am glad they are doing this. The tow companies are like vultures and they will have these cars out of the way in less than 5 minutes. I think it will be great for traffic flow and will help things out. I know $75 is pretty steep but there are a lot of other people to consider than the one whose car is on the side of the road.

It make you think twice about running your car on empty or riding in a car that should not be on the road. As for flat tires, carry some fix a flat in your car, hurry up and get out fill it up and your off.

THE LINCOLN PARK PIRATES by steve goodman

the street lights are on in chicago tonight and lovers are gazin at stars

The stores are all closin, and Daley is dozin, and the fat man is countin the cars.

And there's more cars than places to put 'em he said, but I've got room for them all.

So round 'em up boys, cause I want some more toys,in the lot by the grocery store

Chours) Way hey , tow them away the Lincoln Park Pirates are we,

From willmete to Gary there's nothin so hairy, and we always collect our fee

So it's way hey, tow them away,we plunder the streets of your town

Be it Edsel or chevy , there's no no car too heavy, and no one can make us shut down.

We break into cars if we gotta, with hammer , pick axe and saw

and they said this garage had no license, but little care I for the law

Our drivers are friendly and courteous, their good manners you'll always get

cause they're all recent graduatesof the charm school in Joliet.

chours

And when all the cars are collected, and all of their fenders are ruined

I'll tow all the boats in Belmont harbor,to the Lincoln Park Lagoon,

and whenI've the ransom, and sunk all the ones that won't yield

I'll tow all the planes who block the runways, at Midway ,Ohare, and Meigs field.

Wey hey, tow them away,The Lincoln Park Pirates are we

From Wilmette to gary, there's nothin so hair, and we always collect our feeAnd I think it's enopugh,so let's call his bluff

andTHROW THE BUM OUT OF Town

<tinfoil>Watch for a sudden increase in the number of mysterious flat tires (imagine someone in a nondescript car tossing sharp objects out the window onto the road, and one or more tow trucks ready for the work that results).</tinfoil>

It's not free. We pay for it at the pump, but it is worth it. I have much empathy for people broken down on the freeway. It has happened to me plenty in my youth, but people got places to go and one stalled car can add an hour to people's trips out here in So Cal.

When your stuck in traffic behind a stalled car you wish they just dispatched bulldozers to push the wreck off the side of the road. Or maybe helicopters with big magnets. :-)

I was talking about the reference in post #5 regarding contract towing services who provide tire-changes free of charge.

In the Detroit area we have those courtesy vans. They are sponsored by CVS stores and cruise the highways. They are free and great advertizing for CVS.

I was there in the early eighties. When it rained there would be a wrecker perched on every overpass. Stopping on the 610 loop for any reason was very dangerous and lots of people got killed. The cops stayed off of 610. It was too risky to stop anyone on the side of the road.

Triple A must have been late with their annual donation to the Mayor's political fund this year.

I am surprised that the Mayor's office did not claim to be doing it for the children. What a crock!

Was it a woman changing the tire in a mini-skirt?

Nope.

This is the stupidest, lame brain, idiotic, half assed, dumb cooked, lame, weasel ass, putrid, underwear skid mark law I have ever seen in my life, and I will be the first person to be rolling down the freeway with a flat until I can make it to the next exit, drivers be damned!

Yo scumbag corksuckers in City hall (yeah you mista mayo and all your loony goons), if you want to fix the traffic problem, why don't you fix the damn freeways. They suck, all of them. You couldn't plan your way out of a boot if you were lifter by the heel.

Anytime you have 6 lanes reduce to three, build freeways that overpass roads instead of roads overpassing the freeway, provide one lane transition exits, underutilize million dollar street signs with nursery rhyme slogans such "click it or ticket", "steer it and clear it", "blow me then know me", and etc. you're gonna have congestion.

Houston has perpetual road construction that never ends, lights that never saw synchronization, freeways that bottleneck at every loop, wrecks that take months to analyze, and streetlights that are archaicly controlled.

Let's start with the real problem! Politicians!

but you ain't touching my vehicle until I get a police report to back up what I'm going to have to explain to my insurance company.

My thoughts exactly, seems like the city might be setting themselves up for a few lawsuits.
