Dallas Green should have been arrested for grand larceny when he left Philadelphia to go to the Cubs and pulled off that trade.
That was the beginning of the end of the Phillies as a regular contender.
Hot stove PING.
Ripken should be unanimous. Gwynn was excellent, but for a single's hitter, he would have nailed it by hitting .400. Still, he's happy in life and a sure first balloter.
Well, I am, and let's be honest for a moment - Ryno was a heck of a fielder, but he was a lightweight at the plate.
Alas, the story in Atlanta is that Dale Murphy was passes up again again.
"Dale Murphy, the Braves star who played from 1976 until 1990, was one of 27 players on the ballot, but he was snubbed. He received 54 votes, but with 516 ballots cast, only candidates receiving 387 or more votes were elected"
Dwight Gooden? Maybe we should make room for Jose Canseco, while we're at it!
I don't think so. Ever hear of Rogers Hornsby?
Are you serious?
No way! 200 wins don't get it on the first ballot.
Can't disagree with Ryno or the Chicken Man, but Jack Morris and Goose Gossage should be in the HOF too.
Ryne Sandberg doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame, his name doesn't even belong on a ballot.
I went to Cooperstown 2 summers ago, half those players don't belong in there. They are not the "elite" of the game.
Ryne Sandberg is not an "elite" second baseman, good yes, great maybe, but not elite.
Why do you say that? He finished in the top 10 in the league in slugging percentage five times. Not too many second basemen do that.
Yes, but the Rajah also played SS and 3B, although 2B was his position in his prime. Hornsby did hit 301 HRs, but not all were as a second baseman.
What about him? He played 603 games at positions other than second base. Presumably he hit some of his 301 HR at those other positions.
No way Gooden or Hershiser gets into the HOF. They're no way near 300 wins and neither has more than 3,000 K's.
Who would you consider to be the elite second basemen of Sandberg's era?
Bruce Sutter and Goose Gossage should be there.....
20-25 years ago, those guys were dominating.....but since the role of the closer today has become a 1 to 3 out specialist, saves go out like candy, so people forget about those two.
Those guys would pitch 2.5 innings many times, and if your team had to face them in the 7th, you knew your team wasn't going to win.
I think at the time of his retirement, Sandberg was second to Joe Morgan.
I don't think Gooden will make it, but Herschiser might. He literally carried the Dodgers on his arm in 1988 when they came out of nowhere to win the pennant and World Series over better teams in the Mets and A's.
don't forget about Don Mattingly...
