Firing Rather would make cBS culpable and lie'able which of course they are. What needs to happen is pressure put on the FCC for allowing them to investigate THEMSELVES.. After ALL the FCC has a 300 million dollar budget this year(2004) probably more next year.. What happens to THAT money.?. Down a rat hole WHAT.?.. Bush pal'ing around with Clinton has an omnious odor about it.. Closeing the borders and putting some fire in the kettle at the FCC could put a hurting on the bad guys.. That probably WON'T happen.. Clinton would have none of that.. Clinton (bof of them) and Carter would have a fit..
Being a, "Unite'er and not a divider".. is starting to smell like TREASON.. from my computer desk.. At least it smells like RINO.. nothing worse than the defacation of a RINO... it smells like cowardice..

NEWS ALERT
from The Wall Street Journal
Jan. 10, 2005
CBS fired four employees -- including "60 Minutes" producer Mary Mapes -- after an independent investigation into a report about Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard found that "basic journalistic steps were not carried out in a manner consistent with accurate and fair reporting."

When Dan Rather was caught red-handed passing off forged and fraudulent documents indicting the president of the United States for supposedly not fulfilling his National Guard obligations, he resorted to the Hillary Clinton defense.
One of his producers was quoted as saying: "All Dan could say was that this was an attack from the right-wing nuts, and that we should have expected this, given the stakes. He was terribly defensive and nervous."
Have you ever noticed the last refuge of scoundrels is not patriotism, as the old aphorism goes, but labeling name-calling, reducing intelligent debate to bumper-sticker shouting.

Congrats to JimRob, Buckhead, Howlin and the others for breaking the memo madness wide open.
Pity the report is a whitewash but we expected that. Rather got to fall on his sword metaphorically but he'll still be "reporting" on 60 Minutes.

Rather should be fired too. As it is, his pretense to being a "reporter" or "journalist" is now revealed to be pure BS.

WHAT WE NEED TO DO....
We need a slush fund here at Free Republic. We could hire a news crew to follow Mapes around like Michael Moore and document her wallowing misery. Just like 60 mins has done for decades. You dont think Foxnews or ABC would play it in a heart beat?

Didn't Rather's daughter have a hand in this one? Why is her name not mentioned?

From the TOC, all you need to know about the thickness of the whitewash:
B. Factors that Support a Conclusion that a Political Agenda Did Not Motivate the September 8 Segment...........................................................................................214
1. The Previous Work of Rather and Mapes............................................................214
2. The Editing Process Added Balance....................................................................215
3. Assuming the Killian Documents Were Authentic, They Added New Data to the Bush TexANG Record...............................................................................216
I especially enjoy #3. "Well, if the Moon really was made of green cheese, it would add new data..."
I wonder if Art Bell has contacted BSNews about the Rather job. Seems like he'd fit right in.

Brilliant! Let C-BS investigate itself. I bet Ted Bundy wished he had the same leeway. They can huddle like roaches in the dark planning there reaction to being caught and in the end push a couple of scape goats into the light to be crushed but they fail to see the larger picture. CBS has to prove their ability to present the news properly to a nation who has faith in what they report. This is nothing more than a Dinosaur in its death throws unable to come to grips with its inevitable demise. This is not over as they hope it will be, but this will be a slow tortured death enjoyed by the right
