I've been thinking on this one for a bit - and I can't see where you can get a girl's name from "Seven of Nine."

They landed on a planet with all blonde people. When I heard his name I loved it.

Yeah Uhura would have been too obvious, everyone would have teased your kid mercilessly for having geek parents.

Whenever she and I discuss her name, she always says, 'I would never have forgiven you for naming me that'. Up until they came around for our decision on a name, it was to be Uhura. At the last second, I changed my mind.

Geek parents!!! uhhh, I guess we were. lol

"Seven of Nine."

Was that the name of the episode? The main male characters name was Thyree, I believe that's how they spelled his name. It's been so many years.

Do you remember a deaf mute female character named Rayna on another episode? She had the ability to take away Kirks pain and his injuries would appear on her? Guess what......

You named her Louise? :)

Your name isn't "Flint," is it??

That was "Requiem for Methuselah."

And no - I'm not a Trekkie - Google is my friend.

As for all your other things, how many of those things in your list appear regularly in regular fiction? That stuff isn't generally in sci-fi for the same reason it generally isn't in any fiction: it's boring and would be a distraction from the story.

Point well taken. Thanks for the explaination. :o)

I don't remember any of the titles, but it was a good one.

Louise, LOLOL

I'm not a Trekkie either. Well, maybe a little. Hubby loves them more than I. Shoot, we still watch the re-runs.

Rayna is such a beautiful name.

Check out the new Battlestar Gallactica series on SciFi channel. Its quite realistic. They curse, smoke, drink, and screw around.

Actually you are thinking of Lake Nyos in the Cameroons. Are any of you people actually geologist? Or does the extend of you knowledge on earth science end at making a paper maché volcano in grade 5?
Actually Yellowstone DOES sit on a so called 'Hot Spot' similar to that which causes the Hawaiian chain. This chamber of molten material is the cause for the hydrothermic activity and boils which you can see for yourself at Yellowstone Park.
Oh and by emitting more CO2 (a green house gas) you are not going to stop the effects of a volcano. Volcanoes throw out tonnes of CO2, sulfur (also a greenhouse gas) and other gases. Its not like they're going to counteract themselves.... nobody here has heard of the 'year without summer' that my friends was Tambora (Indonesia). Happened in 1815 and the dust which spread around the world was enough to block out the sun, change wind patterns (ie weather) etc.
This is all to say that all though it seems kinda psy-fi, its all possible my friends.

Welcome to FR, bramble. You will likely discover that we post opinions on many subjects regardless of professional education or training.

If your lake Nyos comment was directed to me, FYI I was referring to the caldera described in this link:

http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/vwdocs/volc_images/southeast_asia/indonesia/toba.html

nobody here has heard of the 'year without summer' that my friends was Tambora (Indonesia).

You may note that I referred mistakenly to Tambora in post 43, then corrected it to refer to Toba in post 48. The Tambora eruption in the early 19th century was pretty dang big, but a mere popgun compared to Toba which was closer to a Yellowstone-sized eruption.

My 3rd grade volcano didn't even erupt right.

The U.S. government was portrayed alternately as evil/corrupt or just incompetent and unable to figure out to handle the disaster.

Ok, so it was at least partly a well-researched documentary.
