We voters have already battled and voted this down twice - it's the damnabel lib demonrat gov that has decided to push it thru regardless.
These libs do not care how we vote - if it isn't the way they want, they simply ignore our vote and end run it. The "flat landers" )out of staters) have systematically, over the past 30 years, moved in and taken over.
As for the smoking - When I came back home t'Maine over 20 years ago, a statewide restaurant chain started the "no smoking" ban. Everyone screamed and hollered and predicted doom for them. Instead, their business boomed year after year. Until others decided maybe they'd best give a go - and their business increased.
See, it's like this: non-smokers, and many do have allergic reactions, including sinusitis, to cigarette smoke, - can not or prefer not to eat in a smoke filled environment - so avoid it. Smokers can have their smoke outside before eating, take a break between, and have one after. But at any rate, they aren't subject to getting sick if they have tgo wait a bit.
Better believe it! There are enough places I have to go where I can't smoke. That's fine. But when I went out for a meal, I expected an ashtray to be on the table for me in the smoking section.
No smoking? Fine. Then you won't see me or my money again.
Heavens, mewzella. I have no clue. I am not sure how much of a tax increase on rooms Maine government want.
reminds me of what Ayn Rand said - if you shout - you've lost your argument, even if right -
but most people shout - (the libs sure do) to try to make it sound more plausible (see my post #61)
How are you guys doing with all those "visting" Somalis in Lewiston? They paying their way yet?
Next step?
Make everyone a non-smoker.
Call me cynical, but when one puts the pieces together, with government holding the pieces, the directive will be to make our society a non-smoking society with "drum roll please"....our money supporting the efforts to do so.
Third grade was a very enlightening period in my life. ; )
Not to worry SheLion for if it takes the loss of "free Enterprise" to make all of society "smoke free" then so be it.
We are, after all, the lone agitator in the world as the sole "super power" and we need to get in line with the rest of the world and this is just one step in doing so. /s

Wait a minute. You are way off base here.
I have been here 2 years longer then you. I have never heard of a statewide restaurant chain starting a no smoking ban. Ever.
Chili Pengree and the Partnership for a Tobacco Free Maine (formed after the Tobacco Settlement agreement), forced a smoking ban on all restaurants in 2000.
Then, since other business's that had liquor licenses served food, the smoker's took their money to taverns, nightclubs and sports inns.
That wasn't good enough for the PTFM. They then forced a total smoking ban to cover all of the above the 1st of January 2004.
Business's haven't increased! Many small restaurants across Maine have been forced to close.
So you have an allergy to smoke. I'm sorry for that. But don't you think this decision should have been left up to the business owner and not the state? Who wants a state run government? I sure don't!

What are you talking about? I get it. You can't stand me so you are trying to make an ass out of me, is that it?
You are ignorant, you know it?
Stick to the issues. You want a piece of me, FReep mail me!
Your reminiscing is to be taken as gospel?
I think not....
Gosh, perhaps wearing orange would be more appropriate?
What does Ayn think about that?
LOL
When I lived in California, in answer to people who'd ask: "Where are you from?" I would say: "Maine."
Q: "Is that in the United States?"
A:"Ah, it's in New England."
and their comment would be something like: "Oh, I've always wanted to see London." okay...
As a lowly Suth-erner, I am confused. I've always thought we came from the backwards part of the country. Up north they pay the HIGH property taxes, etc. so they don't have polluted rivers, etc. I thought all the smokers lived south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
I don't expect to travel up Maine way and this anti-smoking crap seals the deal. No way will I EVER venture across the Maine state line. And I don't smoke. Let the Mainesters rot with the anti-smoking Nazis. Been nice knowing ya'...SSZ
Let me think...
Joseph Stalin?
I just knew there had to be one!
~sigh
HUSH! we wanna keep 'em down t'Old Orchard and south! :O)
No. They aren't "novels" - they're history.
Don't come! :O)
Don't be - stick to it, please.
(Actually, I'll let a secret out of the bag - if there has been a volcanic eruption the size of Pinatubo or Mt St Helens in the past year, it will be a cold summer here as the ash is still in the atmosphere...and that small dip it causes in the temp is just enough to make it an un'summer here.)
maybe they ran into too many of the type that come up here and treat the locals like yokels :O)
In fact, I don't even want to be in a state mixing with people who elect people like Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe.
