It is great to build homes for these people. The thing I don't understand is why not build 5 $100,000 dollar homes for 5 different familys of fallen soldiers. A half million dollar home has to be a bit of an excess.
Well, the company I work for donated time and materials for the Dolan Family in Tampa a few months ago (a synthetic putting green). The Dolans received a check for $100,000 from the home builder which was earmarked to pay local taxes.
You're right though. I'm sure it's not always this way. Also, the Dolans still have to pay a mortgage on their previous house (even though it's no longer there).
It ain't the money; it's the time and manpower.
They only have one week, and most of the help is volunteers working up to 20 hrs a day.
Next week they'll be building a house for another worthy family.
Some people are never satisfied.
From the shows that I have seen, they have set the families up with something so that they can continue to support themselves. One example that I can think of was the guy who was diagnosed with adult epilepsy. They built him a garage that is every man's dream, so that he could work from home.
That is cool.
Me too, remembering now...sniff-sniff.
FYI..coming up in a few weeks is the episode from Lng Island..a cop with three young daughers, whose wife died of leukemia at 28..
Oh yeah :( It was waaaay out east otherwise I would go to see it. There's a company nearby that did the windows for the house. Very nice.
Excellent. The show is fun to watch and does so much good for people that it's easy to overlook the fact that it's an hour-long infomercial for Sears. I love it when capitalism works this nicely.
The host, Ty Pennington, is all over tv with ads for his own line of stuff at Sears.
This seems like a project that will have me bawling too watching it.
Credit where credit is due though! Fair play!
Everyone knows around this house that when Extreme Home Makeover and Extreme Home Makeover: How'd They Do That is on ---- LEAVE ME ALONE! BE QUIET!
LOL! My wife is the same way. Originally, she wasn't interested in watching the show but once she did, she was hooked. Now she tapes her other Sunday night shows and watches Home Edition and How Did They Do That? on Mondays.
Hey Ken, I saw that episode this week. At least I'm pretty sure it was the same one. The dad had three boys, not girls but he was a LI cop with a wife who died at 28.
It was a nice episode. Not my favorite one, but still very nice. The hidden game room was very cool.
And the cop room for one of the little boys, with a jail cell for a closet.
I've worried about the same things you have. They give them these huge houses when they weren't even able to upkeep the homes they had to start with.
I love the show. Never miss it in fact, but I do wonder if they make arrangements for them to be able to actually afford the houses they get.
I've seen episodes in which the old mortgages were paid off by the show, and the recipients were given substantial checks to assist with future expenses.
Taps....wow, reminds of everynight in basic...always very moving.
Ping
Nice report.
