About 20 years ago I recall my father coming home with the windshield of his work van in little bits all over the passenger compartment. He was driving I-94 through downtown Detroit and some lovely little miscreants dropped a bowling ball off of an overpass. It landed in the passenger seat, thank God. 2 feet left and he would have been killed instantly, like being hit by a cannon ball. Attempted murder sounds about right.

Yeah, but the best part of that whole Nichols debacle was the making of Ashley Smith out to be some sort of heroine. From very good sources close to the case I've learned that she was NOT some "random encounter" for that murderer but that he'd been 'involved' (ahem) with her prior to his murder spree.
Which makes more sense, when you think about it. Him just running into her in some anonymous Gwinnett apartment complex after a Marlboro run at 2:30am makes less sense than him seeking out the probably-only person who'd take him in without question that day. I'll give her credit for doing the right thing, but I feel certain that she already knew him VERY well, if you catch my drift.
She is writing a book. If she did know him before the shootings, that fact is bound to come out sooner or later.
