Tierney: It's hard to say what's going to happen. I'm glad they're trying to find a way to make the Web pay. The libertarian in me thinks you've got to be self-supporting, and just giving away content is not a long term strategy. That said, I'm concerned that conservatives and libertarians may be reluctant to pay for New York Times editorial content and opinion. I won't pay.

I look forward to reading this guy, glad the libertarians could get a foot in the door. Libertarianism ideas generally catch on quick if they are given exposure.

Easily obtained without paying in NYC. We have stacks of unread NYTimes in the recycling piles.
To: traviskicks
That's because most of them are based on common sense.

I want the US to have 2 political parties:
Party A -- Conservative on Social issues and Conservative (but perhaps not nearly enough!) on economic issues.
Party B -- Liberal on Social issues and Conservative on economic issues.
I'd always vote Party A.
But Party C (Liberal on Social issues and Liberal on economic issues) needs to fade away.

Read Tierney's current column on questions for John Robersts. Its hilarious. For example, instead of asking Roberts what he would do on Roe v Wade, how about asking him which he likes better "Ashley or Mary Kate?"

I'd spring for something akin to a "Taxpayer's Constitutional Liberty" party, with a heavy bias toward property ownership and property rights, seeing as how property rights are the foundation for all other rights. A moratorium on expansion of any existing federal agency or writing of new federal law, with agency employment levels scaled back through attrition over time. I might make an exception for a new agency that would be basically a predatory entity, funded by a modest percentage from the fraud and waste found in other agencies... that would be nice.
This would be cherry-picking the best features from the Republican, Libertarian and Constitution parties, basically. And, ditching the baggage of all three as well.

From time to time, Ill ping on noteworthy articles about politics, foreign and military affairs. FReepmail me if you want on or off my list.
If anyone notices regular OpEd columns from John Tierney or David Brooks being syndicated in other papers around the country, please let me know because I can't pay good money for the only Times' writers that don't make me embarrassed. Please let me know even if it's days old. I simply can't send money to the NY Times.

I agree with your sentiments. The pubbies have too many RINOs, and not enough conservatives or libertarians. I'm in NY, so I have always been registered as a Conservative.

Reason: What do people get most exercised about?Tierney: Anything that is construed as defending Bush really raises people's hackles.
The President is certainly a lightning rod for the left's mental problems.

Wow! We have a libertarian afraid to let the market decide who makes money off editorial writing. Maybe he's ready to join Hookers For Chastity Belts.

Tierney: Anything that is construed as defending Bush really raises people's hackles. When I was at the Times Magazine I wrote a piece about recycling that set the record for hate mail. The mayor of Pittsburgh wrote an op-ed demanding that I apologize to the city after I wrote a column about the problems with eminent domain there that I'd seen. We just have very different views of eminent domain. I was concernedâI am from Pittsburgh and I love it, it's got great neighborhoods that haven't been touched by eminent domainâthat people would think I didn't like Pittsburgh.Marty, yinz think that this deserves a ping n'at?

This is the only guy I've enjoyed in the NYT for the last several years, including Safire. I decided to try his Metro column after Buckley's son recommended him and haven't been disappointed. Seems to be the only thinker in the lot filled generally by lefty, lib, 'RATs with nary a brain cell working.
I'll miss only him when the charging begins.
