Sure, there is. I have made no final decision regarding Ms. Miers. My quarrel is just with your use of the passive tense. Forgive me, I'm an English teacher. Passive is usually only used by politicians when they want to hide information. :)

They used to drill us on active voice in the Army schools -- they hated it for whatever reason.

Imo, it's useful. Like you said, it's a good way to obfuscate things. Or to be honest about what you know or don't know.
