It says something about how the police and home guard have their hands tied. Fully unleash the gendarmarie and watch things get real quiet, real quick. Simplicity is best.

It also has renewed debate about France's failure to fully integrate its millions of immigrants, many of whom are trapped in poverty and grinding unemployment...

What's there to debate?
Heaven knows I'm not a Francophile, but if the US can't integrate blacks after almost 400 years, how can we expect the French to do it in only 60?

In a free society, it is impossible to "force" people to integrate, in theory as well as in fact.

Yeh, they are so much better. They TALK to the thugs. Start talking Jacques, and fast. Ohhhhh, they are not listening? Oohhhh, they are saying it is YOUR fault they are not working? Hmmmmm, may your worldview lens expand just a teeny bit, jacquie.

We were in Paris in 1999. Live in Los Angeles, so we are not naive to urban problems. We took the subway to see the dead French Kings out this same way. Got off, looked around -- WHOOOOEEEEE, feet get me outta here. We turned around and left. There are huge problems in Paris. They hide them, of course, so the tourists can 'feel' safe. Seven nights of rioting, to honor the end of Ramadan, and the French have no plan but to TALK??? Bye bye Jacque. Bye bye France. Glitter and be gay.

It's 210 years, and three weeks since Napoleon gave protesters a "whiff of grapeshot". Where will this all lead?

"...has exposed the despair, anger and deep-rooted criminality in the poor suburbs"

Too bad Chirac couldn't have been more honest, and acknowledge this is the NORMAL condition for Islamists -- his preferred ally...

Sleep with dogs, deal with the fleas.

The Eiffel Tower will become the tallest minaret in the Islamic world ---- SOON.

For some reason, I'm picturing a young Kevin Bacon in ROTC greens and a parade marshal's armband, clearly near hysterics, holding his hands up and screaming, "Remain calm! All is well!!!"

"What is more interesting are the moderated comments that readers of the Globe and Mail posted. They actually seem to be blaming France's poor record of social responsibilty for immigrants as the cause of the riots. Canadians seem to have a sense of socialst superiority over the French and blame the French for racism, rather than the actions of the rioters as a problem. Canadians, typically, have no sense of personal responsibility. I wonder if the Globe will publish my polite, non-PC, comments."

I'm glad you got out of your home country. I was reading the conservative Western Standard and one reader said in response to the riots, "Picures 6 and 7 speak for themselves. But, Islam and immigrants aside, the grievances sound pretty real to me. Remember Watts, Detroit and South Central Los Angeles.".

Now I presume (s)he must be more conservative than average Canucks to have the guts to read the Western Standard. If what he believes are basically watered down version of American/Australian Left, then what hope does Canada stands when we know 62% of the poeple are even more leftist than him?

The people I met were very pleasant. On the street, I got the same rude treatment that is typical of any big city. I work for a French based company so my French coworkers were good company. Most of the French that I do know ask not to judge France by Paris. It would be like judging America by New York. I was warned repeatedly to never carry my wallet in my back pocket. The theives are like artists in how they can steal it and you don't even notice it. Also, the French do blame most of the street crime on the Muslims. There is no love there.

Of all the things you can say about the French, when it comes to their culture, they lose the cowardice. They were happy just letting the Muslim fleas live in certain areas and to do what they please therein. But when it comes out of those enclaves, there will be hell to pay. THe people of France can't stand the fact their government is trying to placate the Muslims in the same way Amerians are frustrated by both political parties here handling illegal immigration with complacencey.

When my wallet was lifted, it was from the airport to the hotel. Our company discourages taking taxis because of the cost. Next time, I'm telling the bean coutners to stuff it. I had to spend too much company time dealing with police reports and getting replacement credit cards that was saved by taking the train into town.

Thanks for the compliment. the line you quoted, " But, Islam and immigrants aside, the grievances sound pretty real to me. " is fairly typical of Canadian thinking. The Government is Nanny and will take care of your problems. Socialism is deeply engrained in the mindset there. In 9th grade, I remember watching a film, produced by the govenrment, that trumpeted the social justice of socialism. In art class, they praise the development of secular humanism as a superior spiritual belief system, too. I'm glad I got away from there, but I'm still going throught eh green card process. I'm one of the last few people stuck in the old system.

Canada right from the founding always has a form of High Toryism on the right that believes government has an obligation to look after the needy etc. I feel that contemporary English Canada (which reads Ontario and perhaps the Maritimes) supports socialism because they see it as the "red" form of High Tory ideology - especially as Canadian leftists have made peace with the monarchy as the head of state.

What you saw at school in your youth were equally mouthed by Prime Ministers long before Vimy Ridge: Sir Charles Tupper (PM in 1896) famously said, "'Canada,' he explained, 'shall dominate the American continent, not in aggression or materialism, but in the arts of peace, in the greatness of its institutions, in the broadness of its culture, and in the lofty moral character of its people.'". Free market self-reliance is not entirely absent - I just don't see it anywhere east of today's Manitoba.

Having said this, this country is no better. We are somewhere more conservative than Canada (conservative-leftist divide at 49-50%) but much mroe leftist than Aus.

The French assumed that the Muslins they allowed to immigrate would adopt the secularism that has become the norm of French society. Many did, but now Islam has become the common bond of the agrieved.
