It was seized in war. It's no longer U.S. property. Seizing it back would be an act of war once again.

"I would militarize the site, and make sure we get everything."Yeah, something like an armed trawler with a couple of swabbies with M16s should keep the canadian military at bay.

Yes, when I first read the headline, I thought of the plunder that the Clintons and their acolytes stole from the White House.

Be on the lookout for Hillary Clinton to take diving lessons. From Ted Kennedy?

What I wan to know is why these shipwreck divers dont just take the stuff and then sell it at auction without saying where they got it.
They had to have known that various governments would try to take it from them.

1) Everyone would ask where they got it. Identifiable 18th century White House effects and British cannon don't just turn up.
2) It would almost certainly be illegal. Even if they could manage it, they would create a beautiful paper trail and leave damning evidence in the hands of proud collectors eager to show it to experts.
3) Without their history these artifacts would lose much of their value.
4) Clandestine looting of historical wrecks is frowned upon by responsible divers.
Personally I think that if I had obtained a license to hunt for treasure, then found some, and then the British authorities had claimed it, I'd row it back out and chuck it overboard in the vicinity of their sovereign wreck.

Really cool that the ships the limeys were using to transport their stolen loot sank!

In post #7 of thread that linked to this one Arkinsaw said that the Treaty of Ghent required return of all property seized by the British government.
