If we would have gotten into a fight with the Russians, the Western Europeans would have backed out. Russia was going to wait until NATO was gone before starting WWIII, and would have not attacked Western Europe.

I wish it was not so. But my experiences with Europeans is not good toward America. Yes there are some exceptions, but most of them don't like us.
European socialist see the US as the bastion of Capitalism and they wish our defeat as a rule. They resent American success over the Soviets and want to get even.
European nationalists are envious of a young nation as ours that has stepped in and removed them from world power status. The fact that their power was built on a house of colonial cards doomed to collapse is conveniently forgotten. They don't want to face their ugly past, and in focusing their anger on us, they can fool each other in to believing CIA conspiracies and other excuses for their demise.

Ronnie defeated the Soviets, but history will be kind to Ronald Reagan in all but one regards: Ignoring the threat of Islamic Fascism.

Abandoning Lebanon after the Beirut suicide bombings fueled the mantra of the Islamo-fascists and other assorted America haters: "Kill enough Americans and they go home".

But gee, lots and lots of lefties have told me that the USSR posed absolutely no threat to us, and that the dirty capitalist war-mongering, etc, etc, USA was the only threat to world peace. In fact, they're still saying it.

I'm sure we had plenty of plans to Nuke them too. In fact I know we did, since I helped put together the mission folders for flight crews to use in implementing those plans. Of course those were not in the context of a European War, but rather a Global Thermonuclear War.

Thanks for the combat mission folders. I was one of your customers. The Soviets didn't invade Europe because it wouldn't have remained a European war. It would have resulted in full-scale retaliation on the Soviet Union -- as President Kennedy told the world in so many words during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Yep, unlike Ike who understood a bit more and sent the Marines into Lebanon in 1968, Reagan made a mistake and pulled them out.
He should have carpet bombed the Bekka Valley and all Syrian military positions.

Ronald Reagan didn't ignore the Islamofascist threat. It was an emerging threat and he had bigger fish to fry.

He also needed the Islamofascists for cannon fodder in Afghanistan to bleed the Soviets into withdrawing. Also to keep the Iranians busy fighting Russians instead of us.

Saddam played us, the Soviets and the Chinese off each other. But we were able to use Saddam to keep the Iranians from moving West.

We needed to keep the Soviets from getting a warm water port at all costs. So unfortunately compromises in Beirut and elsewhere in the ME were made.

Given the complex games going on internationally and domestically in the 1980s, it is amazing that the Soviets finally fell. It is a good thing for us that their system is inherently unstable. Certainly the left in the West were sure they would prevail.

We owe the Poles and Pope John Paul II more than they ever will get credit for, for bringing about the end of "the Evil Empire."

I still think that there is a whole lot of black material for future Tom Clancy books about what really happened to bring about the fall of the Iron Curtain. Maybe in a couple of decades some of it will be declassified.

Did their bravado earn them a place on the target list?

Well, I could tell you, but then I'd have to shoot you. :)

"The Soviets expected us to nuke their supply lines going through Poland."

Thanks. John O'Sullivan agrees:

"The map also shows smaller blue mushroom clouds representing the Soviet guess of where NATO would aim its nuclear missiles -- along the lines of the River Vistula to block Warsaw Pact reinforcements from Russia."

Thank you. All the more reason to resist the Left--a blank-check fifth column, willing instrument, and enabler for any enemy of the Free World.

If we would have ever went to war with the USSR, they would not have fought us in Europe. Rather, they wanted to go to war with us over here.
