The biggest problem with the media today ... and it gets worse the "bigger" and "more important" the reporters get ... is laziness. They want to sit there and write what people tell them, whether it's at a press conference or "unnamed sources." And then if it turns out to be wrong, they blame the messenger. Journalism was a lot better trade when people actually worked at covering the news instead of wanting to sit on their rears in pressrooms or, in the case of TV folks, provide a shoulder for people to cry on instead of nailing down factual information.
LOL!!
That'll learn me! ;)
Can't argue a bit. Check out my original post in this thread, about how the media today would rather be first than right.
I think that is where the bad information started too. My guess is that someone said, we are checking FOR vital signs and someone thought they heard, we are checking THE vital signs
The media got their cues from the families in the church. THey were ringing bells, screaming and celebrating. I don't blame them......but SOMEONE should have checked the info at some point in that hours long wait.
The fact that the no one from the mining company went to talk to the families for HOURS should have been a dead giveaway. We all were caught up in the hysteria.
The govenor has spent all night and today saying "It WASN"T ME! IT WASN'T ME!!! I DIDN'T DO IT" All RIGHT ALREADY!
Geraldo on Fox showing tape of how he first heard they were alive...he kept asking "who told you that"? Nobody ever said. Just that there was an announcement at the church and the bells started ringing.
Was watching Fox all through the night and now I think their reporting was disgraceful. Shame on them! The tabloids are more believable than Fox.
So how did the media get the information that the "rescued" miners were going to go directly to the church, as they had initially reported?
Very sad.
I'm sure the MSM followed journalistic standards in reporting this story.
Couldn't you say the same about the MSM?
Who knows? In mass hysteria people do and say all sorts of things. It will be interesting if these people are ever identified. None of the families knew who the unidentified informant was last night. Everyone ASSUMED someone different: Gov. staff, mining employee etc. etc.
Now, I am NO fan of Geraldos. At least we know HE didn't start the rumor.

That's how ALL the media found out. I was watching LIVE and they were just as confused as we were at home. The families started pouring out of the church declaring "12 ALIVE!!" Every single media person I watched, and I was switching channels frantically, was in shock and confusion.
What would have been so tough for a reporter to simply say, "We hope this is the truth, but the fact is we don't have definate confirmation of anything yet."
TOTALLY AGREE. EVERYONE should have done that. Including all of us here that were watching LIVE. Like I said: WE know better!
Ping to NnB, one of FR's literary aces.
At least he didn't get down on one knee and draw a map in the sand to where the survivors were.

I was hopeful along with everybody else. But even then I thought, they aren't going to come up for awhile even if they are alive, and a lot of things could happen between now and then. Something just didn't seem right, but even so, I didn't think much of it at the time. But I wasn't going to be convinced until I saw them back on the surface. Sadly, we know that never occurred.
This mess is a direct result of lack of command and control.
Incident management requires basic stuff like one spokesperson, one on-site commander and strict instructions not to shoot off your mouth or use your cell phone to contact any news medis, family members, etc.
Not good and the blame does not lie entirely with the news media, because the news media must be handled and directed by those on-scene. That is why one person must command at these things, not 45 individuals.
Bravo. Exactly.
We must hold the media accountable.
