"What was she waiting for? Why didn't she leave years ago?"

She thought she was special. (There's only one 'special' in that country)

Maybe those Supreme Court Justices who like to consider foreign law might pick up a few ideas from Mugabe... Oops! Looks more like Mugabe got his ideas from them!

The U.S. Supreme Court Justices who like to consider foreign law might pick up a few ideas from Mugabe... Uh... On the other hand, it looks like Mugabe might have gotten his ideas from them!

Many hung on in hope, also currency controls are tight so even if you sold your place it would be hard to get your money out, even illegally, who wants Zim dollars ?

"Mugabe's house has been under construction for years and this irrational, bankrupt regime only notifies residents now."

. . .I guess they expected better from this low, life form. . .who typifies what being a good totalitarian is all about. . .

That said. . .we are only a few feet away with our own 'Eminent Domain'. . .which I surely hope finds a way to revisit a more competent Surpreme Court.

I truly do feel sorry for all those suffering in Zimbabwe. . .and it seems they can expect no help from us or the rest of the civilized Europeans. . .

Using what appears to be a car parked in the front left of the house, rough estimating that that house is nowhere near 4 acres in sq footage. 4 acres is approx 180,000 sq ft. Not even close.

Anybody who actually bought into a new "luxury" community just to be close to that madman, or because they thought his presence would somehow make them safe, doesn't get any sympathy from me. This sounds exactly what I would expect to happen. Nero did the same thing to people living near his villa in Rome. All dictators need their living space.

Among them are older couples hoping to sell their homes and retire closer to children who left Zimbabwe during the upheavals of the past six years.

"We will never be able to get out now," said an 84-year-old woman.

====================

1) Given the conditions of that country, who on earth did these seniors expect to sell their homes to, and at a price that would let them to get out of the country?

2)Why haven't the kids of these folks gotten them out of there already? Zim has been in free-fall for quite some time. Why aren't the kids telling the folks, "Don't even think about selling the house. You're not going to get anything for. Pack a couple of suitcases. I'm sending you a plane ticket. You're coming here. Now!"

The three floors amount to approximately four acres....

....that house is nowhere near 4 acres in sq footage. 4 acres is approx 180,000 sq ft. Not even close.

Each floor would be just over an acre for three floors to equal 4 acres. Sounds reasonable to me.

Mugabe will be dead in a few years...

After which Zim will fall into an endless civil/tribal war a la the Congo.

(But, OTOH, at least they wouldn't have apartheid)

If you have to get out of a country and you have the money that these people obviously had there are people who can get you out - for a price.

I have heard of people with a lot of money in similar situations who bought yachts and outfitted them with the latest gear. They sailed away and never returned and didn't leave their assets behind. Where there's a will, there's a way.

When you are 70 or 80 years old it's hard to leave a place you've lived all your life and it's hard to believe things will just keep getting worse.
