I just found this article, passing it along. More than likely you have already seen this, but just in case you haven't. :)

http://www.junkscience.com/news/mirrors.html

Secondhand Smoke-and-Mirrors
(How the Pros Tamper with Jury Pools)
Ichiro Kawachi, Graham A. Colditz, Frank E. Speizer, JoAnn E. Manson,
Meir J. Stampfer, Walter C. Willet, Charles H. Hennekens
Circulation 1997;95:2374-239

Thanks for the link.  I have it also.  But this is almost a mute issue now that all smoking has been banned on all flights.

And since there is no smoking, they do not change their filters very often like they used to, therefore more passengers are getting sick.

What a mess!

I think we have found the Howard Deans of the property rights movement. The more these two bray and circumlocute, the more people start to see that these "conservatives" could care less about the rights of bar, saloon and tavern owners to cater to the clientele they wish to cater to.

Not to mention that some dweeb that believes an Outback hamburger is haute cuisine would never set foot in any of the barrooms that I frequent. I got stuck in Eugene, Oregon about a year and a half ago and there was an Outback right behind the hotel I was staying in.

Faux, faux, faux. They even let friggen kids in to run around the bar. Disgusting.

The local restaurants around here get the local seafood, the local grocers do also, the chains do not. I've learned where to go for fresh seafood. Knowing some of the watermen that catch it also helps. I bought clams last week that had been out of the water less than an hour.

I just knew you would have it. :)

I was interested in the point that in order to get more grant money they need to show harm. So how can they studies be trusted, if ever.

If they said, no, secondhand smoke doesn't cause blah blah blah they could all go home and find another job. lol

But is it the substance of the study that's "very helpful"? Or just its timing and publicity?

The only thing helpful about that "study" was the timing. There was nothing of substance in it to justify the claims of the headlines it generated.

One local restaurant here in Richmond, the Strawberry Street Cafe, went non-smoking this past year, and their profits rose because people wanted a non-smoking restaurant.

Under what system other than totalitarianism should that be a decision made by parasites who could only get government jobs, and not the owner of the business who does all the work and takes all the risks?

Speak, tagline, speak!

Goooooood tagline. Sit. Stay.

I was watching a local Baltimore news channel a few years ago and they did a report outside Lexington Market.

"Established in 1782, this Baltimore landmark claims to be the oldest continuously operating market in the United States. Freshly renovated in 2003, it houses more than 140 merchants, selling prepared ethnic foods (for eat-in or take-away), seafood, produce, meats, baked goods, sweets, even freshly grated coconut."

The report had nothing to do with the market which was closed at that time but clear as day behind the reporter you could see into the market and you could also see the giant rat the size of a small dog walking around inside. I never went there again. lol

It's amazing to get home after a night at the bars and not smell like an ash tray. Unless you've been out there to experience it, you don't realize how nice it is.

In a theoretically-free country, shouldn't there be room for people to decide they'd like to have a cigarette with or after dinner, and a purveyor making a decision to provide that experience?

Or should government idiots control every single aspect of every one of our lives?

And BTW, my next cigarette will be my first. I'm a lifelong non-smoker who believes in the value of Liberty per se.

This might be a good trend, though; our country is in dire need of a complete political enema, and this sort of fascist crap might accelerate the process along.

I know, but people will post here about the ills of secondhand smoke and attribute their facts to these studies. The same people watch the MSM and believe everything that comes out of their mouths. But, you already no this Gabz, I'm preaching to the choir.

That's why I've started ignoring both them and their posts. You can't reason with them, so they no longer exist to me. It drives them up the wall when they're ignored-trust me.

I really do need reminded from time to time about "feeding the trolls." But that one today really grated my teeth. Some of them have some nerve!

I need a constant reminder :) It kills me that I let them get under my skin like that.

I'm with you sister!

More than anything else, this is an issue of property rights. A private sector business has the right to determine the smoking rules of their establishment.

The government has no business doing so. It is another power grab by the nattering nabobs who call themselves legislators.

If it weren't for trolls, who would tell us what we like, and what we don't like? As a smoker, I would have never guessed that I prefer the smell of stale beer and piss over the pleasant familiar smell of cigarettes, if some troll up the thread hadn't told me. And how would I know that I like the government forbidding free enterprise, if some troll didn't tell me? Trolls provide a valuable service. Besides, they're funny.

Gabz, what the hell is happening to your state? I was just reading the Times-Dogpatch & decided to vote in the polls they had there. EVERY ONE , I was on the losing end of. People actually thought (overwhelmingly) that applying MAKEUP & SHAVING while driving are LESS DANGEROUS than cell phones-and the vast majority wanted cell phone use banned.
