How much debt are you talking about? Geez, it would cost us about $50K a year to go with private school. We do not have that kind of money unless I go back to work.
I'd rather keep them in public and help out in the classroom. I'm at school every single day helping.
I am looking at a home study program. That may be a good option, but we're still investigating it.
Well two very smart and informed persons that I know (my law partners), and with their wives who don't work monitoring every moment, don't agree with you. I am not sure all four of the kids involved are on the honors track. It might be more like 2 out of 4.
(you may throw stones at me now).
Man, I hope you have your flame proof suit on.
Seriously, when my children were small, "socialization" was the main argument against homeschooling. Some kinds of socialization available through public school education is socialization I prefer my children NOT learn.
Secondly, many areas (at least in fly-over country) have "home school associations" where homeschooling families have sports leagues, exchange teaching expertise (your algebra for my German, etc) with each others' children, and other benefits.
Like you, I sent my children to private schools (3-12). But homeschooling was still a better option for us than public schools.
wow....
well I can't do anything about what HE plans for me or my children. I can plan for what I can effect and anything else is in HIS hands.....
Yep. After going to an elite private grammar school, I went to public junior high and high school in Los Angeles City. Some might disagree, but I think I am at least semi-literate.
Yes, just one daughter. I'm in Baltimore, so the prices are less, however if she did not get into any of the HS that we applied to (3) I would have quit my 80/yr job and homeschooled her ass until she could get in. There is NOWAY I would send her to public schools after 10 years in a private Catholic school (pre-k through 8).
Some of the smartest guys I've met have come out of LA public schools, then went on to the UC system...the state has allowed it to fall into shambles and is now paying the price.
Seems like a waste of coin, but what do I know... I went to public school, capped off with a degree from a little ol' land grant "college" that just happens to be located in God's country (aka Aggieland).
TAMU Class of '88
Class of '84 here!!!
Gig' Em!
At least the public high school spent a cool million on a new football field.
Congratulations on the homeschooling.
Depends on the environment. A land grant college on a resume for Goldman wouldn't get you past the 24 year old HR assistant to the vice president's assistant, if you could get a headhunter to set up the interview.
There aren't any gangs in their school. I volunteer there.

As a gang member?
This year has just put me over the top.
Private schools aren't always great either. That's our problem.
My son went to a private Christian school for k-2, and 2nd grade was horrible. The school thought he had ADD, and his teacher accused him of cheating on spelling tests.
I knew he didn't cheat on his spelling because I quizzed him the night before his tests.
We transferred to a public school that was recommended by a neighbor, and loved it. They tested my son, and found out he was gifted. They treated my special needs daughter great. They always expected a lot out of her, and she stepped up to the plate.
Then our district closed the school, and I hate the school we are going to. I don't want to go to private because of our experience with our son.
Our district screwed up with my daughter, and they are paying for a very expensive evaluation for her. After we get the results of the evaluation, we'll decided what we are doing about school.
Geez, in Texas being an Aggie is a great asset.
What do you call an Aggie 5 years after graduation?
Boss!
Good thinking, then when they're in high school, send them to the local Community college for Dual Enrollment in the Math and Sciences! Some states pay the tuition, but even if yours doesn't, the tuition at Community Colleges is not that expensive, and sometimes the credits can be transferred to the college of the student's choice.
If we only had one kid, we could easily afford private school.
I think we could afford it if we didn't have to pay for therapies for my daughter. Plus, the private schools that I know of around where we live don't really handle special needs kids well. They aren't very accomodating.
It sucks!
"I work at Goldman Sachs. Yeah, why, I'm the vice president, and live in a big mansion with my cat. Yeah, that's the ticket." ;-)
