Seems like there must be more to this story. Why have all these people ganged up on this family, just over seven feet too close to the road and two feet too close to a neighboring house?

Whay you are missing is the names. Hamilton, Mayer, Judd and Eig. Publisher of the Washington Post, NY Times Reporter, ABC News Reporter and prominent laywer.

These are the People Who Matter (PWMs). It appears that Duffys are not PWMs.

In Washington DC, that's all you need to know.

what kind of person buying a $725,000 house wouldn't have it thoroughly inspected for mold, rot, and termites

Maybe one offered a deal too wonderful to be true, or a pig-in-a-poke gummint auction of seized drug properties.

Options = real clear

the city issues a variance - or

Duffys sue the city for detrimental reliance (house cost + improvements, to date) & move elsewhere...the house being unlivable

There are two houses in a prominent U-shapped wash that did not have to get Floodplain permits because the bright lights downtown never put "boots on the ground" to make that determination – chi-ching – developers. It is only a matter of time before Mother Nature takes charge - there is no one to sue as no one will take the blame and if they have flood insurance, they will never be able to collect as the Insurance company will claim they were duped. Two families are in grave danger – they must be totally unaware of where they are or just plain……………………

In my part of California, people wouldn't act like this.
As a matter of fact, during the recent attack on the Dennys in Pismo, one local 73 year old retired man tried singlehandedly to stop the gunman.

Not all Californians are idiots. Just in LA and SF.

Again, a Washington thing.... the real estate market is calming down now, but was very hot for a long time. They've been in this house long enough that they probably bought during a "hot" period, when houses all had multiple bids, and sellers gave you preference if you not only overbid but also did not have a house inspection - just to make sure the deal would go through.

In this part of Chevy Chase, $725k is a bargain, so I'm sure they didn't ask a lot of questions. Just another reason why you should always have a home inspection.

The only way the people can stop this sort of abuse is with civil lawsuits. Some of these type of lawyers that sue the government in defense contracts would do real justice.

What kind of people are they?

Chevy Chase is a very well to do area. It is generally pretty liberal too.

The kind of people you don't want to live next to. Unfortunately, We may need to check out who our neighbors will be as part of the home selection process.

It's about arrogance, vanity, pride.

--the neighbors,
--the bureaucrats,
--the court's.

Possibly even the remodelers, though I'm on their side in this.

We don't call the area the "People's Republic of Montgomery County" for nothing. It's quite probable that these unlucky homeowners fit the liberal profile as well, given the demographics of the area.

the house was originally built seven feet too close to the street and two feet too close to the home of William Hamilton, an editor at the Washington Post, and his wife, Jane Mayer, a staff writer for the New Yorker

Let me see is I have this straight

A few members of our elite media kicked these kids and their parents out of their home and are putting them in bankruptcy .. all because of a few feet?

I wonder if this Eig dude's related to Sam Eig, whom I never heard of until they named that highway after him.
