Easy. They already killed off so many prior to 2004 that it was possible to take some time off. Now 's the time to pick it up again, prior to the election. Verstehen? [/irony] You use of German in this circumstance was improper. Indeed "Verstehen" does mean "Understand". However German grammar does not allow the word to stand alone with a question mark. In the present-tense there is no "you" implied. In the formal you would need to write "Verstehen Sie?" Informal, "Verstehst du?". In theory, you could write "Verstanden?" past tense which would be the equivalent of "Understood?".
It doesn't bother me a lot, because the point of language is to communicate. But, if you want to mangle a language and really pi$$ people off, use French. Comprendre?

You mean that mass deaths caused by global warming/cooling, the deliberate starving of the poor, the cutting of medical benefits, the genocide of Black people in the wake of hurricane Katrina and the increased suicides of workers unable to cope with the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression that are all the fault of George Bush really aren't happening? I'm saddened ...deeply saddened (sarcasm)
