Not raped but a heavy sexual theme between a 12 year old girl and an adult male.

There are stories about the Hollywood 'Golden Age' that would give one pause. Supposedly Judy Garland couldn't stop giggling during one scene in 'The Wizard of Oz' and Victor Flemming, the director, calmly walked up and slapped her across the face. She was 16 at the time.

Short sighted Hollywood can't figure out any other way to tell the story than to film the rape scene, as though there was no other way to have the audience understand what happened. It's exploitation to sell tickets.
There was a reason why Agamemnon left the stage and returned with bloodied eyes. The ancient Greeks understood some things are more horrible when not shown. Hollywood is gunning for the pedophile dollars. I also liked the bit in the article about trying to escape those evil Baptists.

I seem to remember something similar with Brooke Shields and the film Pretty Baby. I understand Brooke isn't too crazy about her mother these days and I've always wondered if that film had anything to do with it.

Unnecessary hysteria--she plays a character who is raped, as the next paragraph explains. As in pretend. The lead paragraph should be clarified. Okay, it's bad enough that there are actual people out there that do such things to kids; so do we really need to show it to a whole bunch of new prospective sickos?
And I can't even begin to imagine what it does to the mind of a 12 year old girl - actress or not.

It is still child porn. Why would this be different than any child porn n the internet with "pretend " actors?
It is porn if it shows a child being raped or in provocative sexual scenes..doesn't matter if its "acted" or photshopped. So..... as long as an "artistic " small film company puts out the film...it is now not pornography?
as for the parents, they don't give a hoot about this child...they know, money or not, she will be even more in demand for the money films after this outrage.

This isn't Hollywood. This director is something of a fringe figure.

She's the hottest child actor around who doesn't need more publicity. They probably have visions of an Oscar.

Hang them anyway.Or just not watch this movie, which sounds awful. The last movie I watched about something like this was "the Woodman" with Kevin Bacon. It is, bar none, the most evil movie I've ever seen.

All subject matter is fair game but you have to earn the right to deal with it with insight into the material. If you just ban depictions of pathologies the only thing that will disappear is the depiction...the pathologies will remain (you'll still have the Raskolnikovs of the world but you just won't have 'Crime and Punishment').

Take a look at the films and TV shows that she has appeared in. Clearly her parents have not been too particular about the subject matter of the works she has been exposed to.
Hollywood's obsession with putting children in harm's way to elicit cheap emotional reactions from the audience is one step removed from snuff films. This is just the next step deeper into Dante's Inferno.

I recall an interview of the grown up Linda Blair recounting her experiences on the set of the Exorcist.
She didnt fully understand what was being filmed and said the director did a good job of shielding her in a way but while her voice was dubbed by Mercedes McCambridge for the final cut, the cast and crew were none-the-less very disturbed by this little girl speaking such vile dialogue and acting out certain scenes.
Bastard out of Carolina was a disturbing but well made movie as was Delores Claiborne that also dealt with a similar topic.

Oh man - that is so right on. They bash anything Christian, but one hears very little, indeed, about what happens to many Muslim women. Ugh - I have a hard time talking about it - gives me the heebs.

Then defend Bio-Dome!
That was depravity on a scale that beggars description.

I don't have a problem with anyone depicting these situations, and whether or not I approve of the depiction isn't important. All I can do is support those who treat the subject(s) in ways I approve of, and hope that those whose moral perspective isn't in agreement with mine fail so badly at the box office that there will be no follow-ups. To expect Dostoevski-level treatment from the current crop of filmmakers is to set oneself up for huge disappointment. Lillian Hellman is one of our most acclaimed writers (not by me) and her treatment of controversial subject matter is typical of how US culture treats this stuff--as a gimmick, with no insight, no moral foundation, just this free-form "leave people alone" glibness.
The only American writers who dare inject judgment into these situations are few, and their point of view is usually something as 'stunning" as "leave people alone to live their lives as they see fit, if they're consenting adults". Yawn.
