You need to lighten up. I could easily post something sarcastic, too, just to get a rise out of you people.

"She'll get $3333, her lawyer $1667"

She is a lawyer. She was protesting against the temporary closure of her courthouse during the capitalist Americas Summit. It's also doubtful that police fired even rubber bullets at them without the herd having acted-up.

It was in bad taste but they weren't trying to hurt the lady. They clearly were shooting at the sign not trying to shoot her in the head. What are you more upset at? The cops laughing or them shooting rubber bullets at her? Jackbooted thugs would've left her in the hospital beaten beyond recognition. Some places in the world have real jackbooted thugs in real totalitarian states. It is exactly this kind of over-reaction that minimizes the real atrocities in the world like Abu Grape. ;-)

I watched that video again, and it was chopped.

It made her look like the lone "victim protesting totalitarianism" in the middle of street.

There is more to the story. Count on it.

25-50% of Miami? She might wind up derailing the red-hot downtown building boom!;) Seriously, it is quite disturbing, especially there was a remark made bu one of the BSO personnel that was not on tape but was in the newspaper, to the effect of "I'd go to war with any of you guys" . I mean, WAR? The militarization of the police has gone way too far, and when they feel the need to bop fat middle-aged women in the head with rubber bullets, then laugh about it, that's just sick.

From the "rest of the story" dept:
Lt. Schwartz [of the Miami-Dade PD said] that the police were pelted with "rocks, feces in plastic bags and bottles of urine." Three officers were admitted to a nearby hospital for injuries sustained during the protests, and the Miami Police Department reports that a total of 18 were injured. Al Crespo, the photojournalist, admits that some protesters "acted out," ...

I would think that any abuse of power by a public official or a public servent would be of interest to those on this site.

Certain posters hate law enforcement. Maybe they had a few too many experiences with cops, or they just don't like authority.

This thread seems to be one of those that caters to the malcontents who fit into both categories.

Thanks for posting "the rest of the story."

I've got two sons who are police officers. Their departments don't use rubber bullets.

In this situation, the miscreants would get tazered.

More of "the rest of the story":
KATHLEEN HUGHES: In fact, ... a small group of troublemakers gathered outside a fence near the hotel where the ministers were staying. The city had invested nearly $200,000 dollars to build the fence.

CHIEF TIMONEY: They came down at seven in the morning, and tried to tear the fence down. The hook — you know, they came down with grappling hooks — tied on rope, trying to pull it down, doing their thing, throwing paint at police officers, attacking the mayor’s car.

KATHLEEN HUGHES: There was more later in the day protesters can be clearly seen on tape, setting up barricades, trying to start a fire, and throwing things, in what Timoney calls a barrage of fire from the anarchists.

When you see a line of cops in riot gear like that coming down the street, it's a cinch they're not selling raffle tickets!

Post 28 has the "rest of the story". Heres more:

Commander Armando Guzman, a 25-year-old police veteran and leader of the Miami Police Swat Team during FTAA, said officers faced violence that wasn't publicized.

Protesters set fire to freight pallets they placed on the street and fired ball bearings at police using ''wrist rockets,'' sophisticated high-velocity sling-shots, he said.

Demonstrators also flung pieces of brick and rebar at cops, said Guzman.

He was nearly hit in the head with a urine-filled Gatorade bottle.

Guzman witnessed the Ritter shooting.

''Unfortunately there were people between us and them,'' he said.

``If you're in the middle, you're going to get hit.''

half of the cops on every force are the best folks you'll ever meet. They are the kinda guys who run towards the WTC and save people. They risk their lives every day making our lives safer.

The other half are nothing more than glorified street thugs themselves. They hide behind a badge and are generally miserable failures as human beings. For these guys a law enforcement career is nothing more than the opportunity to be in a legal street gang, albeit a street gang clad in bad polyester and driving Chevy Impalas.

I've met both kinds.

There may be more to the story but we know for sure:

1. All they needed to do was go up and arrest her if that were appropriate. They have NO RIGHT to inflict pain on her.

2. The police were apologizing for what was said on tape in their post action briefing.

3. These bullies are laughing at clearly criminal behavior on their part.

I am sure I have not sympathy for her cause. That does not make me sympathetic to bullies with badges.

Someone certainly needs to go to jail over this. And I am one that thought no one committed a crime against Rodney King in the famous taped incident. The gutless bullies hiding behind a badge that shot that woman deserve to be taken out back by her male relatives and have their asses kicked, but the chickens like them would again hide behind badges because they are too gutless and thus shoot women with rubber bullets.

More:
In preparation for the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) meeting that began on November 17, the Miami City Council passed a special ordinance (law) targeting protesters. The ordinance outlawed the carrying of many ordinary objects because they supposedly could be used in protests. Among the items banned were sticks [such as the kind used to hoist protest posters], anything pointed, balloons (not filled with air), supersoakers, scissors, glass containers, etc. The city council basically banned "anything hard that may be thrown and is carried with the intent to use unlawfully."

The special ordinance also outlawed any "coordinated movement" of seven or more people in the street with the intent to gain attention or stop traffic.

Wrong. You are making a judgment based on a chopped and selective tape of the events.

You have NO idea what actually happened in real time.

There are plenty of "fat middle aged women" destroying this nation through the courts and the ACLU. I'm sure the police get tired of the crap and treating these morons with kid gloves. It doesn't excuse the behavior because it was somewhat out of line but it wasn't a dire offense as some here seem to think. The wussification of this country is unbelievable. So many have no idea what REAL torture or abuse is. A whole segment of this country believes George Bush is a worse threat to the world than a radical muslim dictator with a nuke or Kim Jong Il running his country like a concentration camp.

The generation of spoiled brats have come of age and I fear they will need more than a few rubber bullets to put them in their place before all is said and done. I pray not but it seems they will not have anything but war in the end. They have the right to protest but when they step over the line they can expect the police to provide a response to them. They should be happy they do not live in Cuba.
