Honestly, I cant see The Russians firing over fishing rights

It's not just fishing rights. It is what the Japanese fisheries do to the resources. They're pirates.

(Australia)

Mr McLoughlin detailed the fraud on August 1 during a wide-ranging speech on national fisheries reform at a lunchtime seminar to the Australian National University's Crawford School of Economics and Government.

"It's just been revealed that … on a 6000-tonne national quota, Japan's been catching anything between 12,000 and 20,000 tonnes for the last 20 years, and hiding it. And has probably killed that stock … And that's one of our major fisheries in Australia."

Lots and lots of proven oil and gas south east of Sakhalin Island. Makes me wonder what the geologists are finding elsewhere on the continental shelf over there -

Now come on...I am far from being a liberal, leftist surrender monkey.

I have to give Putin a lot of credit. After the Breslin massacre Putin went all out to track down the terrorists. He also warned them his forces would give them a free circumcism (probably means cutting off more than foreskin). He calls the terrorists what they are and doesn't care about issues relating to profiling and the like -- he also sent out the Russian military equivalent to the KGB to track down and kill anyone responsible for killing Russians, anywhere.

Bush calls them Islamofascists and then his Saudi friends call him up and then he describes them as "folk". Come on now, give me a break.

Also, Bush is taken about as serious as a group of troubled students would take a 22 year old short, shiney substitute teacher. He's also just not serious or we could have had our border sealed off several years back. Putin at least tries to secure his border -- and if you've been to Russia recently you'd see how seriuos they are about documenting your visa status.

Bush could take some lessons from a REAL conservative and patriot like Putin.

If the continental shelf in this region proves as rich in oil and gas as I suspect we could see some real tension. Note the recent dispute between Korea and Japan over oil and gas deposits Tsushima Island area.

Present situation ofshore of Sakhalin Island

'Twas the Hatfields and the McCoys, or maybe the other way 'round...

Seriously, poaching is poaching no matter who does it.

Re #45

Nationalism + Competition for Resource = ????

You probably know what ???? is.

N. Korean missile/nuke crisis could be a prelude to full geopolitical struggles that would ensue probably in decades.

Re #46

It could be poaching or something else. However, I was saying that it would lead to something much bigger down the road. By that time, it would not matter what is the original dispute is about.

They killed em over commerce?
---
Happens every day in the U.S., when a perp gets killed trying to hold up a bank, liquor store, 7-11, you name it.

And you're amazed?

"Kofi Annan already blamed Israel for this."

And it's clear a defeat for Israel. If Israel weren't such cowards they would have killed all the Russians and Japanese and claimed the Islands for themselves long ago.

And Putin sells munitions and builds nuclear reactors for the islamofacists.

You might want to slip that fact into you Ode to Vlad.

I have been able to meet (future prime minister) Mr. Abe a number of times. He is quite a character. This is going to be fun.

That is a beautiful area up there, scenery wise. You can stand on the cape Nossapu, a long, thin peninsula, and see the Russian held territories from there. What a shame the Soviet Union has never given these back.

Would ocean mineral rights have anything to do with this action?

There's a great lesson here for Ariz, Calif, and Texas:

What would the Russians do if 6,000 Japanese fisherman invaded their waters EVERY NIGHT...?!

That usually does not happen. The Japanese fishing boat was going to pull over but the Russians fired anyway. It is typical Soviet Naval tactics.

Japanese fishing fleets are the scourge of the seas. 'Course the Russian fishing fleets are too, but not as bad as the Japanese, I think.
