Anyone who buys more than two at a time is probably up to no good.

I have thought of that but let's say 500 of them go up at one time, killing 15 people in each one. That is a minimum of 7500 people and taking into account only those in the immediate vicinity of a gas station. The fear would be astronomical, not to mention the financial aftermath to the stock market, fuel shortages, etc.

So you think there is a Constitutional right to own an untraceable disposable cell phone? Or to buy large quantities of anything for resale on the black market without paying sales tax?

Bust these guys for sales tax evasion. It worked with Al Capone.

But you still won't need a valid ID to vote. After all, that would be disenfranchisement.

I'll bet they don't file tax returns either.

I think they're going to blow all the gas stations owned by middle easterners across our country at the same time.

This has always been my theory, too. The Muslim terrorists are stockpiling in order to plant IED right here on the streets of the U.S. Many of the other ideas posted here also make a great deal of sense.

The FBI didn't even bother to go out there and investigate?
Maybe someone dialed ICE by mistake...on a TracFone.

Good theory. However, I think there is something relevant about the fact that they throw out the chargers. Perhaps they are buying them and sending them off to Iraq for use in IED's. I wonder if they are compatible with the phone system over there.

Yes, sometimes the simplest explantion is correct, they are going to use the phones to call someone.

Use the phone once throw it in the trash or sell it to someone cheap and let the government track the second owner's calls.

All we have to do is have the phone companies call all of their phones once a day for a while. There is nothing like haveing you bomb explode in your face just as you are completeing it.

It would upset the sensibilities of some on this board that I would suggest such a 'nasty' thing like that to save my family and my country.

keep your ammo stored in LARD

LOL! You can also pour your bacon grease into large coffee cans. Dump in some ammo, mix thoroughly. Enjoy! :-)

"Suspicious parties in those instances were of Middle Eastern descent... The men told city police they planned to resell the approximately 1,000 cell phones for a profit of about $5 apiece."

I hope thse guys are registered and with an appropriate DBA and tax number at the local tax office.

And if transporting or selling across state lines is now a federal offence.

"On WRKO talk show Howie Carr heard woman who claimed to work at Ft Devens (old MA military installation) say that lithium ion batteries in large quantities represent some sort of toxic threat. Can anyone confirm this? Recall account of cell phone buyers that were separating phones from batteries. If for resale, why would one separate the batteries?"

To add to the ball bearings and scrap metal in huge fertilizer bombs......a few hundred small lithium ion batteries will just add to the havoc.

The article missed the whole point of these purchases. These guys are not primarily using them as detonators. Nor are they buying them for the lithium batteries (they could just buy lithium batteries).

Very simply, they want to make phone calls that are not connected to other phone calls because they consider the fed surveillance program to be effective. If the Feds check on who Ahmed calls after talking to Baki, it would be much harder if Ahmed uses a different phone for each call. Indeed, it would be that much harder to find Ahmed in the first place.

That's been my thought about this whole situation. The terrorists make a call with a phone and then throw the phone away. One phone, one call. Not traceable and no need for a charger.

The reason that there has been upswing in massive purchases of cell phones is because the terrorists are planning something big for August 22 and/or September 11.
