I've been fortunate (or maybe some music snobs would say "unfortunate", perhaps... ;-) to have seen Schickele live and in performance four times. From the moment he always makes his classic grand entrance (usually late and in the worst beat up tux he could find! ha!) to the last cutoff and last laugh, those concerts were worth every penny in ticket prices.

I've seen him twice. One was with the Phoenix Symphony, and he performed the Concerto for Bassoon vs. Orchestra (S. 8') and Wachet Arf (S. K-9). I don't think I've ever laughed that hard again since.

The second time was with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and he did a semi-staged performance of Oedipus Tex (S. 150).

How do you copyright something from an artist/author that died three centuries ago?

"His kids used a lot of his manuscripts for mulch."

Well, Bach did end up "De-Composing" for a while there after his death...

*RIMSHOT* Thank you, I'll be here all week! Try the Buffet! It's fabulous!

Actually, this is pretty cool if true. :)

One of the concerts I saw was held at Illinois State University when my sister was playing flute in the symphony & concert band in about 1975. (I was jealous that she got to play with Schickele. ;-) And yes, Schickele arm-twisted the best opera teacher in the school to sing the tenor of "Wachet Arf" all dressed up in the dog suit!

We're not really going to degenerate down the path of bad Bach organ jokes, are we? OK..... twist my arm.....

Question: Why did Bach have so many children?

Answer: Because he didn't have any stops on his organ.

(Loud rimshot heard in the background...)

What advice did Bach's best friend give him the night before Bach's honeymoon?

"Bach, man! Turn 'er Over, Drive!"
