I have found a sense of humor serves as a great teaching aid, as I'm sure you are well aware. Just the other day, I was having a student do a writing assignment. Though he can write well, he often takes a while to get a topic going. I told him to write a funny Halloween story about me. His eyes shined and he perked up. I came back to check on him, and he was writing away nonstop. I had to stop him at 6 pages (he's never written more than 2 before). In fact, the same happened to all of my first graders. I said they could write stupid stuff about me. All of a sudden, my little 4-sentence writers became composition writers. Ever since then, most have done pretty good too. Some always ask on a topic/writing form if they can write something funny about me.

After all, I'm just a big kid myself with the most wonderful job. :)
