Ok, let us define our terms, for this discussion. A "Hungry family" is one where the kids don't eat dinner, because no dinner is available.

I know my grandmother suffered thru that, in the 20's - but it never happened to my parents, or to me, or to my kids.

Does such a condition still exist in the US?

I have no idea.

This is just another problem for our Democrat-controlled congress to magically solve. They'll demand McDonalds to sell cheap food then sue them for fattening the poor. Wait, they're already doing that.

Heck, I'm hungry right now. And when I get home from the office I'll have a kitchen full of food, but until then, I'm hungry according to that definition.

Yeah, here's the stark reality of hunger in America speaking from a school containing some of the poorest children in the United States. Most of the kids are fat. They may not have a roll of big bills in their wallets, but a fair number of them are sporting a big roll above the belt. Those are the kids. The parents are equally hefty, for the most part. I can drive to the dump this evening and find hundreds of chip bags, pizza boxes, soda cans, and microwave meals.

Fifteen years ago, when I was broke and living among section 8 and welfare moms, most of them were fat, too. The amount of food you can get with government assistance is astounding if you spend it wisely and incredible if you blow it on garbage. The kids were fat then, too. Not only that, but just about everyone had money left over for pretty decent weed.

I'm glad the see the government has caught up with reality here. I don't expect the activists to ever reach that stage, though.

Well, then, under the old guidelines, you would be counted amongst the starving.....sad isn't it. But, now that we have Nancy Pelosi, all of that has been taken care of....

The change in terminology has angered groups that fight hunger who say it is aimed at hiding a stark reality.

I thought Americans were to fat? When was the last case of an American starving to death recorded?

I'm cringing just thinking about what solution the Dems will come up with for their imaginary problem. But it's sure to be some form of socialism.

There is no reason that anyone in America should go to bed hungry.

If they do, it's the result of abuse on THEIR part, and not on the part of unavailable food programs.

Bump. No way do I believe this.

We may have people who don't know where their next meal is coming from, but they don't have to go without one.

A person can survive quite a while without food. On the other hand, you don't last long without water. I'm more concerned about "the thirsty" than I am "the hungry." We could really knock that 35 million figure in the butt by deporting the illegal aliens. Unfortunately, doing that is politically incorrect and "racist." sarc/off

This is one of the cases where I agree with a gov't "redefinition". Kids get breakfast and lunch at school (and many poor communities have these programs in the summer) There are still food stamps (although they use debit cards as the form of payment now), food banks, and meals at shelters.

There is still a problem with people (particularly those with children) who are too zonked out on alcohol or drugs, or too mentally ill to take care of themselves or their children. Money and programs won't help them.

"There is no reason that anyone in America should go to bed hungry."

There are hungry people in America. There are adults who choose to spend money on other things than high priced food, and a very small number of children whose parents do not provide food for them occasionally.

What is important to remember is that this is based on a *QUESTIONAIRE* that is self reported. For example, a percentage corresponding to a population of about 16 million US residents said that they reduced the size of a meal or skipped a meal because of lack of money. Heck, I've done that, and I have a very secure income.

Less than .1 percent of the surveys indicated that they had children in the house that ever went even one complete day without food. This is almost certainly from special, highly unusual circumstances, such as poor planning, or not realizing that the household was out of food.

The mere fact that this is a questionnaire given to people who might gain from inflating the responses means that it is unscientific and unreliable.

I don't even know where to start with this crapola.

On another forum we have grocery/pantry challenges.the goal is to make the most of our grocery dollars and use what we have on hand to feed our families.

I joked about "having" to go grocery shopping Saturday because I had basically freezer/pantried myself out of food. But when I really sat down and looked at it, I could have easily gone another 2 weeks without buying anything other than milk, eggs and fresh produce. But since I did go, I'm pretty much in shape except for the perishables until after the 1st of the year. And I only spent $75.

I agree that there are hungry people in America.

My point is that those who go to bed hungry do not do so for lack of available food. They do so because someone in their life is dropping the ball in some way.....drugs, alcohol, gambling, insanity, cruelty, abuse, etc.

We pay for their telephones, we pay for their housing, we pay for their for food.

Now they are starving!
