"The change in terminology has angered groups that fight hunger who say it is aimed at hiding a stark reality."

ROFLMAO! It's only cutting into their fund-raising and sad, human interest angles for news features on the evening news during the holiday season while the rest of us eat our watery gruel.

You know, it took a while for it to dawn on me, but this is one big-@ss money making season...and not just for retailers, you know?

And Gabz, I am guilty of Pantry Poverty as well. I could easily make 10 meals to feed a houseful with what I currently have on hand.

(Hungarian Gypsy? I'm pinging you because I think we should do a Freeper Challenge and see just how many meals we can collectively make from our pantries. Maybe in January, after the holiday rush is over? Just a thought.)

We're weird about food in this country. Those of us that know how to get it cheaply, or grow our own or hunt and fish and forage have it made. There are so many without the simple skill of being able to bake a loaf of bread or make a pot of soup from the most inexpensive list of ingredients!

THAT is the REAL shame in our country...that people in this country could starve standing in front of a cupboard full of food, with a pot in one hand and a can opener in the other.

When I rule the world, madatory basic skills in economics, budgeting, running a household and gardening are going to be mandatory for every able-bodied American. How we lost these skills in ONE SHORT GENERATION can only be attributed to Socialism and the desire by the left to make every able-bodied American their victim!

'Solidarity Through Fiscal & Nutritional Conservatism!'

(Doesn't quite have the "ring" to it that it needs to start a movement, but you know what I mean, LOL!)

*Steps Off Soapbox* :)

My Gandma could feed a family of 12 on ONE boiled potato and any fresh roadkill she found that day. ;) (Seriously, she could and did! I've eaten those meals in my youth.)

You can read my tirade about what's wrong with this whole "hunger issue" in an earlier post. :)

I know that.....I needed a bit of a change of pace I think....I could send hubby or child to the freezeer or pantry and tell them exactly where a particular item was, now everything is re-arranged and I no longer have location and stockpiles memorized!!!

I think it is a GREAT idea!!!!!

Last February I was in a cooking competition for the SCA. The scenario was supposed to be that a feast was to be prepared, but there had been issues with getting more food. So, we were only supposed to have the items from the larder, the garden, and some game that had been hunted. I found out with a good imagination you can make some really fancy things with a few items. I said I would probably post a medieval thread in the future. This would be a good time to do it. Especially, since peasant food is good to make out less than what many of us have in the larder. It's also quite tasty.

Don't be so hard on patton, he's on our side (if he wasn't his wife would shoot him and serve him as the roadkill for dinner.)

I own't say anything about his willingness to garden and grow veggies, don't want to blow his macho image.........teeheehee!

On that note, I think I will go and get seconds on dinner...venison soup/stew that only cost me the price of the electricity to operate the crockpot. And it was leftovers from the other night.

I rememember a taxi driver in NYC from Ghana answering me, when I asked how he decided to come to America, "I wanted to live in a place where the poor people are fat!"

"There are 35 million people in this country who are struggling with hunger, no matter what you call it," he added.

I notice even the degenerate hunger-whores like Weill are to shamefaced to simply say these people are hungry. That's because they are not. The only hungry people in America today are either profoundly mentally incompetent, in which case the only thing standing between them and effective nourishment is the ACLU, or on a diet.

Or a child being deliberately starved by parents who are either psychotic, drug-users, or certified foster home parents paid by the County.

I don't understand how anyone can go hungry in America anymore. There are food banks in nearly every town, and just about every Church has some sort of outreach program to deal with families in need, and you don't have to be a member of that congregation!

I know one problem is that the really poor just don't have a good idea about nutrition, and will buy junk with their food stamps, but they are eating something.

There will always be some who slip through the cracks, but by and large, there is no need for anyone to hungry in these United States.

What happened to the Food Stamp program and food banks?

Nothing.

But Hunger was classified as not being able to afford what you wanted to eat, so if I had a turkey sandwich and wanted a hamburger instead but couldn't afford it I was classified as "hungry".

Times were real tough in my construction field for awhile not long after 9-11. I learned how to shop for deals real well at the local Meijer store. I didn't buy what I wanted, I bought what was on sale. Spaghetti for .$50 a box. Spaghetti sauce for under $2.00 a jar. A meal for 50 cents. Eggs for $.98 a dozen ($.48 a dozen on a really good sale), bacon for $2.00 a lb.. Another meal for 50 cents. A lb. of hamburger for $1.68, a can of cream of mushroom soup for .$50, a bag of noodles for $.50. Another meal for 50 cents. Or maybe a beef roast, or pork loin for $1.89 a lb., again a meal for 50 cents.

Living frugally I could feed a family of 4 for $5 a day, or less. And that would be eating fairly well. Of course that wouldn't allow for potato chips, soda pop, twinkies, or gummi bears.

I have a closet set up as a pantry, and a freezer. When I find things on good sales, I stock up. Planning a little bit ahead can save alot of money. Learning to use a crock pot can save even more.

The only gas I have to cook with is the grill, so I rely on electricity.

The venison in my soup pot was not roadkill either, in fact the wife of the guy that gave us the deer last year called me yesterday as he was heading out for hunting to make sure I was still interested in another one. I haven't seen him, so that means he hasn't had any luck, yet.

I really should set hubby up at a window in the barn and when one comes across the field just pop it.......no one would ever know but us :)

Compared to the amount of meat and meals I got from the deer he gave us last year, the 6bucks or so I spent on freezer bags for it was more like 6cents. I still have some of it left. I'm going to turn what is left into jerky and chili this weekend.

patton, what was that I said about having nothing better to do this weekend?

my instructional assistants' dad went hunting this past
weekend. he got a 6pt buck. she expected it to be field
dressed and in the garage waiting for her when she got home
from class tonight. she already knew what she'd be doing the
rest of the night.

Gabz, you missed a bet - in VA, you can kill all the deer you can catch, in season, on your own land. No permit, no license, no limit.

Tell your hubby to have at it.
