>> The dead birds ... more likely they had been poisoned, possibly deliberately, or affected by near-freezing weather. <<

That's what *I* call a cold front!

It's er, uhm, (phrasing it delicately to the writer) ... Mid-summer in Perth, Australia.

Or maybe there are other animals dying too but, unlike the birds, they aren't flying to areas where they are being found.

Except for bats...but that's beside the point.

Darn it. Scratch the "only species that can fly" theory. It isn't working very well, is it?

Certainly sounds plausible. The effects would be very short term though, it would disperse pretty quickly.

Would a belch of methane be able to do something like killing a flock of airborne birds?

Hmmmmmmm. I suppose so. Simple asphyxiation of a critter under the high oxygen demands of active flight, if nothing else?

Paging Mr. Kanye West, Paging Mr. Kanye West! Please pick up the white phone.

George Bush does not care about blackbirds!

Methyl mercaptan - Alternative Name: Methanethiol (HazMap)

Of course not. What I mean is, since air particles disperse quickly, how could testing after finding dead birds provide any clues?

I'm familiar with this sulfur based chemical used in Propane and natural gas to give it a scent. I'm wondering if a methane cloud ... methane is a natural bi-product of organic matter decay and can belch from lakebottoms and seeps from swamps. The sudden release of methane can occur where there are large beds of methane hydrates.

A fly can't bird, but a bird can fly.

Ask me a riddle and I reply:

Cottlestone, cottlestone, cottlestone pie

Sounds like an Ernest T. Bass quote!

A carbon dioxide bubble from some nearby body of water would explain a large kill-off of diverse species.

But CO2 is ground hugging, CH4 is lighter than air.

A methane-hydride boil would explain bird deaths, without corresponding ground bound species deaths, and Perth is right on the Indian Ocean coast.

Would it cause the birds to convulse?

Don't be too hard on yourself, it was less than a year ago that I proved myself to not know much about Chemistry to a few fellow Freepers.
