Researchers Re-Create Washington's Face

There is Washington at age 19 as a land surveyor, Washington at 45 during the Revolutionary War, and Washington at 57 when he took the presidential oath.

My father-in-law had Lincoln family members. His mother was a Lincoln, although no direct connection to Abe has ever been located. We were in Gettysburg and stopped at a museum that had a bronze cast of Lincoln's death mask. My wife and I were both stunned when we saw the face of dad there. I had never noticed any similarity to any pictures of Lincoln. I recall there were 57 taken.

That's really interesting. You do see Loncoln differently than in pictures when you see the cast of his face. Here is a photo of some of the things Lincoln had in his pockets when he was killed and which are now on display in the Library of Congress.

I seem to recall that George was also rather tall among his contemporaries. If you add hair, a spiffy outfit (especially a military uniform), along with his intellect, bravery and passion for doing the right thing for the right reasons, I bet he was quite the figure of Revolutionary Manly Sexiness.

Washington was 6' 2" tall, extraordinary for his time and place. He took care to present an elegant image, with well tailored attire, as he believed that a leader should look and act the part. His personal demeanor was described both as unasssuming and yet magisterial--a man of unprecedented charisma in the New World, and according to contemporaries, he was everything his later hagiographers said of him.
