His step grandmother is black. His biological grandmother is white. His step grandmother lives in Africa.
His biological grandmother lives in Hawaii and has said she is "overwhelmed" by national attention to her son. She has been interviewed in articles from her home in Hawaii.
If you were an elderly woman, would you be thrilled to leave a gorgeous tropical island to hit the campaign trail? Doubtful.
Newt is right he is the the "Therapy candidate" for white liberals hell bent for leather in their liberal fundamentalism.
She isn't in hiding. She lives in Hawaii and she has given interviews. She is not often seen with Obama because.. he's not in Hawaii!
This is stupid. The woman can easily make herself available to the press if she so chooses.

I recall some hedging in the Black Community over Colin Powell's status as "authentically Black" due to his Caribbean ancestry. Evidently that is being glossed over this time. But of course this is all about ideology: Powell was too conservative for most Democrats; Obama is 'perfectly liberal'.
Her black father left when she was 4 so no, I don't think she hits the red carpet with him very often.

Im picking up the pieces now. But it is interesting how the Sun-Times either really screwed up or got duped by the Obama campaign.
LOL...they probably identified the woman as his "grandmother," and the Sun-Times didn't bother to double-check before printing the erroneous name.

Presidential candidates in recent times have tried, with varying levels of success, to 'handle' their relatives. Jimmy Carter & Bill Clinton both suffered significant embarrasment at the hands of their immediate family members.
My guess is that the Obama campaign will engineer a 'coming-out party' for his family members. That way he will be able to spin the story a la Clinton's "Man from Hope" mythology.
When she won some award she ignored the white side of her family, it was pretty low class.

I completely missed this line the first time around. This is absolutely disgusting. DEMAND access to an old woman living a quiet life in Hawaii just because her son is a presidential candidate? That's so gross and self-righteous I don't know what to say.
What's next, hunting down and harassing his white cousins? Second cousins? Great third aunt 12 times removed?
