“Also, the Dems cant back down. They have dug themselves into a hole and it will be very difficult to get out.”
Yep. Harry Reid learned nothing from Tiny Tommy Daschle’s firing in 2004.
“Also, the Dems cant back down. They have dug themselves into a hole and it will be very difficult to get out.”
That’s what I think. The mass murder and geopolitical disaster of a pullout will at some point become evident, I think before the next election.
“GOP lines waver after veto of war bill”
The Republicans worst enemies are Republicans.
We cannot pull out now from Iraq without winning this one whatever it takes. If we do, it will give the Islamicists invaluable leverage with their fellow tribesmen and reduce the American reputation in the world to nothing. Further, it will encourage Al Quaida to commit further outrages and attacks on the U.S. and the west and non-Muslims within Islamic Countries. It would put Iran in control of most of the Middle Easten Oil Fields outside Saudi Arabia.
The Democrats are willing to risk all this to gain control of the government. They are political strumpets of the lowest magnitude.
On the other hand, Bush, while having launched the invasion intially, and was correct in his motivation, lost it all later. He did this when he allowed us to establish a costly goal in Iraq - not just the establishment of a post-Saddam government, but an experiment in a form of a new type of government totally alien to that part of the world and to Islam in general. He lost site of his and OUR original goals - to take out all the states which sponsor terrorism. In doing so, he created a perfect opportunity for the Irans and Syrians and their allies to inflict heavy causalities on a sitting target between two crosshairs.
I think the President will win this, but like all compromises, it has to be phrased as something that is not a crushing win.
I think he will offer to participate in the drafting and definition of . . . not “benchmarks”, but “goals”, and they will be goals he can waive in certain conditions that will be spelled out to provide him maximum latitude. There will be “deadlines”, but those deadlines will be dates by which he will have to report on progress towards the goals or “suffer the embarrassment of waiving them”.
It all will be fuzzy and non binding, but will have enough buzzphrases for the Dems to take to their lunatic fringe and show themselves tough.
The reality will be a victory. No troop pullout deadlines and no binding benchmarks on the Iraqis, but enough of Dem verbage for them to deceive at least some of the lunatics into thinking they are tough and strong.
Sad to say you echo my thoughts exactly.
This is a shameful.
