That's right. And it will be used more for such vital national interests as tax collection and privacy invasion rather than immigration control.
I really doubt that an ID card would be useful for controlling aliens inside the US. This sort of "plan" is like mental junkfood for people who want to hear a quick fix that superficially sounds good and it also relies on the general population's unfounded reliance on high-tech magic. You know, if you don't know how it works, then it must work. It's magic!

Sadly that might not be true this time. Both of our “leading” candidates are panders and opportunists of the worst kind.
