They could wait till after the election, and send Bush off with a big bang.

Attack after 1/31/2009: Test the next president, D or R. But who would the pres retaliate against? Iran?

Attack before 1/31/2009, but after November 2008: Just a backhanded slap at Dubya to leave a black mark of being hit twice on his watch.

Attack before election: Attempt to affect outcome as in Spain...but as Hillary correctly notes, the outcome here would be different, and the hawk candidate would likely win.

So if you're Al Quaeda and you believe you thrive during chaos and tumult, then attack before the election, get the US to attack Iran, get Iran to attack Israel, etc.

If you want an easy touch from the US, and you want Iraq all to yourself, lie low in the US and step up attacks/bloodshed in Iraq and let Hillary win.

Caveat: If you're a terrorist, you don't think logically, so....who knows!?!?!

This is just completely backwards.

No, it is not - Reality is, it is much harder to hide a lie than it is to spin the truth.....

The suggestion that AQ could hide the fact that UBL has died just doesn't add up........Furthermore, the reality is AQ does not hide their HVTs deaths....They celebrate & honor them......Not to do so would be seen as a huge insult to such men.....

If you look at the modern History of terror attacks, those small autonomous cells in the U.S. have made their own primitive explosives (e.g. 1993 WTC bombing, 1995 Murrah bombing) or used civilian aircraft as flying molotov cocktails (e.g. 9/11).

Whereas in attacks overseas, the homemade London subway explosives are more the exception, as our embassies in Africa were hit with military explosives...ditto for the attack on the USS Cole...same again for the 1983 Lebanon barracks bombing, etc.

The point above being that “small autonomous cells” seem fairly limited in what they can do. We pretty well know the size of the punch that they can deliver, and we’ve taken precautions over time to make the “easy” weapons (like seizing another airliner) more difficult than the average Jihadi is likely to overcome.

Obviously there can be exceptions, but I’m speaking more generally.

Faced with the above, there is going to be intense pressure on Al Qaeda leadership to help coordinate an attack with more punch (left on their own, tiny cells are now pretty limited, after all). If Al Qaeda gives in to this pressure, then their autonomous cell structure will have been forfieted in exchange for a centralized command structure by default...making it much more likely that we can round up their leadership (if not before such an attack, which is quite possible, then certainly *after* such an attack).

Also, we need to keep in mind that Al Qaeda’s senior leadership recently called for all Muslims to overthrow Musharaff in Pakistan...an effort that has fizzled and left Al Qaeda with reduced standing in the Islamist world.

That failure has likewise increased pressure on Al Qaeda.

In the light of the above, Al Qaeda still isn’t showing its top leaders. That’s not going to help their recruitment and fund-raising. Each day that passes lowers Al qaeda’s standing in their world.

They aren’t hitting the U.S. again. They aren’t hitting Israel at all. They are impotent to overthrow Musharaff. Osama isn’t showing his face.

They’ve got bigger problems, otherwise they’d be handling at least one of the above...and *that’s* worth thinking about.

Remember, we have to be effective 100% of the time. They only have to be effective once.

Amen, if someone intends to kill you and you are unaware, you have little chance. If you know and you know who it is your best defense is to go and find him and kill him first. George Bush understands this but many people don’t.

I’d say no attacks since 9/11/01 is safer; it’s not forever but only god can guarantee that. Don’t take any period of relative peace and security for granted — as many now think is their entitlement. The world has always been a pretty dangerous place — virtually constantly at war because many countries were trying to prove they were the strongest in the world. President Bush left no doubt that there was only one country that could rise to that challenge, any time, any place, any how.

For that, the Dems and other perennial malcontents are horrified that Americans have a right to their well-deserved sense of well-being and accomplishment.

So whether there is another attack or not before he leaves office, we know we have a president proven to have been able to rise to that challenge. The next guy could be Jimmy Carter all over again.

But they’re not going to be stupid enough to attack on President Bush’s watch.

They’ll wait until some weak-willed Dem like Dennis or Bambi is in charge and then attack and get them to surrender, “Just don’t hit me one more time, please.”

Exactly

I can’t help but wonder what they might not be telling us, since I read yesterday that Nat’l Guard Troops were going to be deployed to DC for a year.

This and all the noise about Iran is making me a bit nervous.

“But he also believes another successful terror attack on the U.S. homeland is inevitable.”

Another successful attack? No, this can’t happen, because we are fighting over there to prevent them from bringing it here. Remember? Oh, yes, I forgot, we are fighting them over there while we leave a porous southern border and while we still easily allow people in from Muslim countries. . . . in TIME OF WAR!
