Democracy, like any government is a tool. When in the wrong hands, the tool can be used for some really bad things.
It is not democracy that is virtuous but enforceable constitutions that protect human rights.

The US will capture and control the nuclear facilities in the event of the wrong people taking control of the government, whether by democratic processes or not.
