"...On the Pentagon's version, a strange voice, in English, can be heard saying "I am coming to you. You will explode in a few minutes." The voice sounds different from one heard earlier in the recording and there is no background noise that would usually be picked up from a speedboat radio.

In the Iranian version, there is no hint of aggressive behaviour.

The Pentagon said it recorded the film and the sound separately and then edited them together to give a "better idea of what is happening"...."

The Pentagon should not have edited them together. It feeds the conspiracy nuts.

Everyone who is informed knows we’re going to have to take out Iran sooner or later. I think we should do it when we’re ready and have the best reason for attacking them. This might not have been it, but it’s coming.

SONOBUOY PING!

Not going to say it.

Wouldn't be prudent.

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

“Ham” indeed. Real licensed radio amateurs never do anything like this, right? Well, it could be the ghost of W2OY, but hectoring Persian Gulf radio traffic for twenty five years sounds a little much for the likes of that spectre or most rogue ops. I’m curious if there’s a Kenneth reading this mail that would know typical frequencies for this sort of communications. Wouldn’t all the Navy’s EW capabilities identify the Monkey’s source immediately, if not soon after the fact? And given the sensitivity of the region, wouldn’t all the electronic bells and whistles be turned on and tuned up? Too weird. On top of it all, the threats were delivered in a prank phone call voice, as if Eddy Haskell defected from the Highway Patrol to the Revolutionary Guard.

If he’s a well known character, our Navy guys would likely have recognized it was him, correct?

A heckling radio ham known as the Filipino Monkey, who has spent years pestering ships in the Persian Gulf, is being blamed today for sparking a major diplomatic row after American warships almost attacked Iranian patrol boats.

I am a licensed ham radio operator. There are several requirements to obtaining a ham license including an extensive exam in correct radio procedures and detailed electrical principles. The filipino monkey is probably not a real ham, but a moron with too much time on his hands.

Inquiring minds want to know more! What sort of things does he say?

Is it remotely possible he observed the incident in real-time to be able to get the blame for the commentary in question?

His voice would be on file, this should be very easy to verify.

He did say that. He also said, paraphrasing, “Goodness, we’ve got a bunch of guys ready to bomb Iran over this.”

I don’t remember anyone saying that. Not even close.

His voice would be on file, this should be very easy to verify.

It can be done scientifically, using forensic sonograms.

The forensic use of voiceprints was killed off in the US by trial lawyers—about 1975.

How did this guy know that Iranian boats were swarming American ships and throwing white boxes in the sea at the time?

Telescope?

Besides, don’t we have radio directional capabilities to determine where it’s coming from?

When's the last time you used a radio with directional capabilities? Radios don't work that way. I'm sure the Navy has RDF capabilities on many of its ships, but it would be a separate device which would have to be activated, and would take a little time to identify a direction.

Mr. Monkey needs a visit from some Navy Seals who can then make sure that monkey meat is spread all over the gulf

“Besides, don’t we have radio directional capabilities to determine where it’s coming from?”

Yeah. But it takes more than two short sentences to triangulate it.

Philippines to the Gulf on Marine VHF band?????

Not even if he had a tower the height of Everest.

Now there are many HF marine band frequencies so perhaps
one of those was used?
