Physical evidence cannot tell one way or the other, however.

Also a mystery is the artistic/technological explosion among humans about 40,000 years ago. Modern humans did not seem to live any differently from the Neanderthals until that moment.

I read that the Neanderthals were physically much more massive than us. That the tendon attachment points on their bones are huge in comparison to ours.

I know when I see a skinny guy with comparatively large hands and massive wrists I know not to arm-wrestle him.

Occam's Razor is useful here for discounting the moon bat theories such as this one. All animals have variations on a theme alive today except for one: humans. There were many humanoids in the past but despite their high intelligence they all died off. The simplest explanation is that they were killed off in war, by us. Modern humans are remarkably all the same and that's because war trims the competing tribes down to best of breed, culture, and technology.
