I feel more sympathy for the police officer(s) forced to down a gun wielding suspect and the dead K-9 partner than anyone that brandishes a handgun in a threatening manner to law enforcement and ends up dead for it.

The suspect is confronted, pulls a gun out from under his shirt? Yeah, sorry buddy, wrong move. You didn't get shot over a dog. You fired shots at police officers and were hit by returned fire.

I'm so sick of these families. Okay, they were innocent, their little angel most certainly was not. You do not brandish a weapon in a threatening manner against police officers or K-9 units and expect to live.

One less scumbag available to pollute the gene pool. Thank you Pittsburgh PD for doing your jobs!

Something's missing from the screed of the dead scum's family which I will gladly add...
"They will pay for killing my son. They are going to pay for shooting my son over a dog!

"They will pay 'cause he was a good boy. He was turning his life around and was going back to school. He even had a job interview 'tomorrow'."

"They will pay 'cause my little angel didn't even own a gun. The police planted it on him. The police even shot their own dog!"

There, much better.

In these situations you could do a 'Jason Blair' and it would be appropriate. It's always the same crap. The ONLY shock here is that this mutt had two parents. Usually it's a grandma or aunt.

He was pronounced dead by a passing paramedic

I didn’t know that paramedics had the authority to pronounce anyone dead! In Illinois it has to be a physician or a Coroner.

What a crazy story! He wasn’t killed over a dog. He was killed because he pulled out a gun when he was confronted by police officers. If he had shot and hit a tree, the police might still have shot him. Would people then say that he was killed over hurting a tree?

It’s always too bad when a person dies, I don’t think a person necessarily deserves death just for having an illegal gun, but the police still had every right to do what they did when an armed man started firing a gun in front of them.

Is there an email address where I can send condolences for the dog’s death?

The dad is not the brightest bulb in the fixture, his son pulled a gun on a police officer, anyone who does that is asking to be shot.

So now the kid’s dad is saying they are not sure he even had a gun and that the officers killed the dog and their son? I read that in another article.

If someone pulls a gun and starts shooting, is there really time for an officer to determine who or what the person is shooting at?

Righteous shoot — all the way. Even the Libertarian cop-haters will have to agree.

“....an unfortunate, but jusifiable action”.

What’s unfortunate about it? That dog performed more good for humanity in one day than the dead perp would have done in his entire miserable life time. Pious arguments notwithstanding, relative worth falls on the side of the Doberman.

If he would have listened to the police officer this never would have happened. Also I would think any police officer would shoot a suspect who pulls out a gun in a threatneing manner.

UPDATE: On this evenings 6pm local news (all three affiliates carried it live) Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper made a statement. The officers DID NOT KNOW that the dog had been shot until Mr. Jackson was down. Jackson was carrying and shot (at Pgh. Police) a .357 Magnum that was traced from a home break in (in the early 2000s). Jackson was carrying a gun reported stolen from a burglary. Per Chief Harper: THE OFFICERS DID NOT KNOW THE DOG WAS SHOT UNTIL THEY WENT TO THE DOWNED SUSPECT. So, per the Chief of Police of Pittsburgh...Jackson was not shot for downing the dog...Jackson was shot as two Pittsburgh Police officers 'RETURNED HIS FIRE.' The officers were being shot at (in addition to the dog).

Again...just an update...

I don’t believe the story...

Would the police send their dog to attack someone who has pulled a gun???

The way it’s done everywhere else is when a weapon is pulled, the police start shooting...Why send a valued, defenseless dog at a loaded weapon when at the same time no one would send an unarmed police officer after the guy???

I’d bet the dog was ordered to attack before the gun was brandished...The soon to be dead guy then pulled a weapon and shot the dog and the police opened fire...

I don’t believe a person ought to be killed for protecting himself from a DOG which is about to tear him to shreds with his teeth...

If you got pulled over for speeding and looked in your rear view mirror and saw the cop putting on a pair of brass knuckles knowing he was going to beat you bloody, what would you do???

If the guy has used a baseball bat instead of a gun, should he still have been killed???

They don’t teach their dogs good manners...

mm, I’d say the ‘burg trains it’s cops to be effective. I like the line about a passing paramedic being right there johnny on the spot and all.
