Other commentators attribute the puzzling disparity between Americans' views on major issues -- a sizable majority gives GOP stands a thumbs down -- and Obama's neck-and-neck poll numbers with McCain to a lingering racial fear.

Depends on the "issues" 'don't it'?

If we look at the election in terms of major liberal agenda items of gun control, same sex marriage, and abortion there is a wide distrinction in positions of Obama and McCain and I can assure you that Obama is NOT in the majority opinion.

Conservatives give a thumbs down to Bush's stance on immigration and McCain's stance on immigration, but Obama's stance is no better.

Is "the war" where Obama is raging over "thumbs down" on the GOP "stands"?

Without itemizing the issues it is just a DNC talking point to say that the public doesn't like the GOP stands. Congress' approval numbers are even lower. Single digit. Lousy talking point for the Democrats to claim they hold the views that Americans support.

We saw that a couple of weeks ago when McCain himself accused Obama of "playing the race card" when Obama said the Republicans were trying to scare the electorate by saying "he doesn't look like all the presidents on the dollar bills and five-dollar bills."

Suddenly, it became a huge issue, fanned as usual by the national media and 24-hour cable, that Obama was insinuating that he was being singled out because he is black.

This all was engineered by the same operatives who were behind the blatantly racist Willie Horton ads in the 1988 presidential campaign and produced the racially charged TV ads that sent black candidates Harvey Gantt in North Carolina and Harold Ford in Tennessee down to defeat in 1996 and 2006 in races they were expected to win.

Notice there is no refuting the claim that was made. That Obama had indeed played the race card and slurred his critics by saying "they/McCain" says he doesn't look like the other presidents on the dollar bills. That was Obama's OWN racist statemtnt of condemnation of McCain. Putting words into McCain's mouth.

And when called on it, he meant that his political BACKGROUND was different. Except that doesn't show up in the pictures on the money.

The author instead chose to blame the messenger rather than try to defend Obama's stupid duck statement.

Don’t “worry”. The Obama-Biden ticket has an old white guy on it to keep the blue collar voters on the plantation. < /s >
