He and Drudge used to talk about that hat. Drudge was a regular on George’s show...on at least once a week if not more in the mid/late ‘90s when The Drudge Report was just getting started and before Drudge moved to Florida and became the huge phenomenon.

I’ve heard that they used to meet for dinner at Musso & Frank...a legendary 90 year old Hollywood restaurant.

“Wow. I can’t believe that old guy was still around.”

I can’t believe he’s not.

To be honest, I’m surprised that Drudge hasn’t put anything up on his website. While it’s true that George wasn’t a national figure, he was instrumental in launching Drudge’s career and gave him the trademark Winchell hat. Even some notice in one of the columns would be appropriate.

Any a number of national news figures would know him...Cronkite, Brokaw, Connie Chung, etc.

One day, late in the show I called just to ask him a question; the call-screener said he didn’t think there would be time to get me on the show, so I hung up.

Imagine my surprise when Putnam himself called me back to apologize for not getting to me.

We talked for about ten minutes; I never called him again - I was convinced that he was the genuine thing.

Who took care of all his “adopted” animals after he went in hospital?

Wasn’t it he who had Rosemary Clooney and Ray Bradbury on his show on several occasions?

He knew everybody, it seemed.

Putnam’s forced tone was obvious. It was good material for Baxter, the rest he did on his own.

From day one of the MTM show I recognized the parody. It was such good humor that when I heard Putnam years later, I thought of Baxter. It always brought a smile.

Along with Ray Briem, another incredible radio personality,

Whatever happened to Ray Briem? The radio station I listed to them on in So. Cal. changed before I moved to Texas and I lost track of both of them.

Most of the youngsters have no idea who Putnam was.

Older Americans on the west coast know him as true patriot. After listening to Putnam, listening to people like Hannity have only made me want to turn off the radio.

George got a kick out of Gypsy Boots and even allowed him on his newscast to help save the Hollywood sign.

"But those people have never bothered to determine my background: Farmer-Labor Party, Socialist Party, lifelong member of the NAACP, member of the Urban League. I went through the Depression, and my father was reduced to selling peanuts door-to-door. Then, because of that, I fell in love with Franklin D. Roosevelt. I've been a lifelong Democrat. I'm a conservative Democrat."

Actually, he wasn't always a Democrat, but he was always Conservative. Source: La La Times

In my house, growing up, you could your face seriously slapped for talking while Putnam was on.

Anyone from LA remember in the 70's, a story about a newscaster who was the victim of a home invasion/hostage/robbery, along with his wife? The rumors were it was either Putnam or Nahan. Anybody?
