I went back and read this screed from end to end. The critical, and childish, failure is to differentiate between what nations need to say in public (diplomacy) and what they do on the ground (military reality).

It was important that we keep Pakistan at least nominally on our side of the fence. It is a large, Muslim nation that possesses nuclear weapons, today. On the other hand, Pakistan has no control over its frontier regions, and no politicial will to gain control of them. Therefore, it follows that we must praise Pakistan in public for its "strong efforts" and in the meantime, send in the missiles, and a few Special Forces, to kill the enemy as we find them, in that area.

Sure, it's a contradiction in terms. But, how much worse would it be if we said in public that we're going to take over the frontier regions and don't care what Pakistan thinks. Obama is a geopolitical moron, and this clown is joining him on the sinking lifeboat.

His thesis is this: Vote Democrat to wage a stronger battle against Islamic terrorism. And he’s serious.

Yeah like Clinton did and like the democrat congress is currently doing with their GITMO BS

Smerconish is now and always has been a typical Philly dirtbag ambulance-chaser (and not very good at that). What he’s always had, in and out of the courtroom, is a big mouth and well-connected friends who were able to set him up first as a commentator, then as a local talk show host, etc... Of all the talk show hosts, I would rate Smerc as being just above Randi Rhodes; his show is a bland, low-brow version of Beck without any of the insight or humor (except that which is unintended).

Philadelphia and the “ring counties” (i.e., burbs) are extremely lopsided in favor of Zero because the dem to rep ratio in the City is nearly 5-1, at least in terms of registration. So Smerc knows that most of his local listeners are, in fact, dems who are going to vote for Zero. I have no idea if Smerc wants to vote for Zero or not, but his show (annoyingly) remains extremely provincial for a national show—all he talks about is Philadelphia and his great love of that fat greaseball PoS, Ed Rendell. I can’t think of a single conservative idea or politician that Smerc has ever actually supported, yet he somehow gets away with the mystique that he is a conservative talk radio host. He’s nearly as big of a fraud as Zero. He simply registered as a Republican in order to gain credibility on the talk radio circuit. He’s no more of a Republican than Bill Clinton (another hero of bootlicker Smerconish).

His reasoning in the Salon article (which he repeated ad nauseum the other day on the radio) is flawed in dozens of ways which I believe others will refute. Suffice it to say that he completely misunderstands the War on Terror, the point of which is to protect the US from further attacks—not to deal retribution for its own sake. That means we take out the biggest threats to the nation’s interests in accordance with the relevant threat level.

Taking the Taliban out of power was the number one priority and it succeeded; the “taliban” we are fighting now is a misnomer as it is more a collection of disparate groups, some stay-behind operations by Taliban, but largely non-Afghan fighters and loosely knit groups of warlords who simply have taken up the Taliban name in an attempt to claim there is some organization.

Saddam, about whom there was worldwide consensus that he was accumulating WMD, that he was directly supporting suicide bombings in Israel, that he had threatened and or invaded his neighbors for nearly 30 years, was the number one threat to American interests—bar none.

Iran is the next greatest threat for reasons that everyone on this Board already knows.

Al-Qaeda remains a huge threat, but it is not a single entity and more like La Cosa Nostra. We will be fighting al-qaeda so long as militant sunnism remains in the world. It is IRRELEVANT whether we catch Bin Laden or not; al-qaeda will remain as much a threat the day after Bin Laden’s capture as the day before.

I used to listen to Smerconish every morning. But he’s changed in the last few years. He’s become a “moderate” wimp who favors abortion on demand. He has also turned into an egomaniac. The only reason he’ll endorse Obama is because he thinks it will make him look “nuanced” or whatever. Michael Smerconish is interested in only one thing-Michael Smerconish.

Michael:
Are you comfortable with Nobama being in the Oval office and having very sensitive intelligence documents in his hands after his spending over 25 years in the company of noted radicals like William Ayers, Bernadette Dorn, Louie Farrakhan, and others? Have you thought this thru?

I think this would be beyond dangerous, and you are promoting such a chain of events. Please rethink your position.

what happened to President Bush's declaration to a joint session of Congress nine days after 9/11 that "any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime."

Two things:

1) The Democrats
2) George Bush

This POS has been steadily moving left since 2004. He wrote an editorial just last week that he was not going to tell anyone who he is voting for. Now comes this.

Money and 15 seconds of fame can do strange things to an otherwise unknown.

Smerconish has further revealed he’s a closet lib with the promos WPHT play of him, saying that Tom Brokaw is his hero. In these promos he mentions how he’s at the dims’ convention, and mentions that Brokaw, his “hero”,is standing behind him as he orders a bunch of strangely-named coffees, and is probably questioning his masculinity. I assert that Brokaw was doing so before this lawyer-turned-talk-show-host ever placed his order.

His father was my guidance counselor in JR HS. Didn’t do much except hide in his office, we didn’t have kids who needed counseling very often.

He’s from the Bucks County lawyer magnet county seat (Doylestown area) yet he practiced law in Philly.

I’ve heard from very reliable sources when he did appear in the Bucks Co. courts he was a joke.

What do you call an ardent Arlen Specter supporter who proposes a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq and accuses Republicans of ‘chicanery’ for introducing proposals on gay marriage and flag burning? Why, a ‘conservative’ of course - if you’re NBC’s Today show and your guest is Michael Smerconish.

Smerconish [who actually served as a manager in a previous Specter campaign] support Specter over Toomey, he went so as to broadcast his show live from Specter’s Senate offices!

He's the local talk radio host in Philadelphia on opposite Bill Bennett during morning drive. Bennett is on 990 AM from about 5 AM to 9 AM.
