The basic problem that these state governments are looking to address is the decline in fuel tax revenue associated with more fuel-efficient vehicles on the road. If you trade in your 15-mpg SUV for a 30-mpg car and don't change your driving habits, you end up paying 50% less fuel taxes even though you are still placing the same burden on the highway system.

Same thing with electric utilities. People conserve electricity and they just hike up the rates so they can continue to get the same type of revenue.

Got on star? It's already done. And they've had little black boxes in cars since the 70's. Insurance co"s can tell when you're lying.

The only difference is such a system isn't mandatory nor controlled by the government.

Yeah, but the green governments would want to nail the rural people for burning the most gas, and use this tax as “punishment” for living in rural places. They want everyone crowded into cities to preserve the precious green space.

If you drive a car - I'll tax the street
If you try to sit - I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold - I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk - I'll tax your feet.

Right. But one difference with electric utilities is that the utility company has the ability to charge higher rates for the electricity you use during periods of peak demand. A motor fuel tax has no comparable mechanism in place, which is why we have roads that are congested during certain parts of the day and nearly empty at other times.

Don't bet on it. Law enforcement can get access to on star systems.

Look, they can’t even get people to pick up a free converter box so TV can go digital. You think people are going to put a GPS in an old car? What is the cost to government to retrofit the poor underclass’s cars?

That’s not what I have heard is in the plan. The plan was to hit the rural drivers. They also want smog control inspections that would take the old farm trucks off the road. They plan to offer $4500 tax credit to get the old vehicles off the road. You can’t buy a newer replacement truck for $4500. We have an old ‘93 truck that we use around the property or driving to the dump. We drive it so seldom that we have an occasional use insurance policy on it. We just call the insurer whenever we are going to drive it. Limousine
liberals don’t drive clunkers, this regulation will hit the old, the poor and the rural dewellers.

On Star can be used to slow or stop your vehicle as well, IIRC.

Don't bet on it. Law enforcement can get access to on star systems.

Sure if the information exists they can most likely access it just like divorce lawyers or juvenile courts can. The difference is it isn't mandatory, if you don't want such a system in your car no one is saying you have to. When they do then it becomes big brother.

"The only difference is such a system isn't mandatory nor controlled by the government."

And when onstar systems are put in every car, the police can just point that special little device at an onstar equipped car and shut it down, even if the onstar subscription isn't activated. Onstar also has GPS, so once they know the onstar ident. code they can track the car as well.

i have a prediction: my gps unit will fail to function properly .. often

Picture a message on the gas pump saying your request for fuel has been denied, since your GPS unit indicates you should have a full tank.

Its more than just a tax—this is a MASSIVE invasion of privacy to facilitate a tax. And I bet all those Liberals who screamed bloody murder over the Patriot Act will be just fine with this travesty.

But if I want to totally disable or even remove any onstar system I can do so and there’s no law to stop me.

If this is put into place, it won’t be long before you begin to receive in the mail bills for speeding.

That’s where the ballot initiative comes in, they need to make it clear now that they won’t tolerate such an invasion of privacy.

Actually I picture a scanner system in all Law Enforcement Vehicles that scan vehicles and note any malfunctions of Government Owned Monitoring Systems. One would know they were in trouble when they see flashing lights in the rear view mirror and then confiscation of the vehicle for Noncompliance.

They’ll nationalize OnStar as part of universal healthcare and make it manditory.
