Leisler, I won’t argue with you one bit on the comparison between Palin and Romney. I think she’s simply amazing. A shining light in a pretty dark sky for our country. I hope I get the chance to vote for her for President someday.

And I would similarly put Romney’s record in the same category as, say George W. Bush.

What I don’t get (and maybe you can enlighten me on this) is why often the same people that are willing to forgive W. for his leanings towards big govt, especially in the last few years, many of these people have a deep-seated viceral hatred for Mitt Romney. To a degree that just can’t be explained by their disdain for his “flip-flopping”, “RHINO”-ness. Especially when pressed, these people kinda like Bush.

Now I can’t read minds, especially on an internet forum like FR, but I have had more than a few of such people that I personally know admit to me that deep down it is that Bush is a born-again Christian and Romney is a Mormon. That freaks them out.

I believe that Huckabee purposely played to this bias/fear/phobia, and successfully knocked Mitt out of the primary race. Of course he and his supporters claim that Mitt was the spoiler for him, but come on, everyone knows he didn’t have a prayer in the general.

Let me state... I am a born-again seminary-trained evangelical and I am troubled by the fact that the unfounded fear of Romney’s Mormonism was (again IMHO) the deciding factor for him not getting the nomination.

I’m not trying to convince anyone to change their mind about Mitt. I’m just trying to understand it. I ask myself why I, a guy who I would bet is probably more consistently conservative than 80% of the people on FR, can look beyond some of the failings of Romney and see someone with huge potential and someone who is at least “flipping” in the right direction (i.e. towards a purer conservatism)

And honestly, I am seriously questioning whether there is some sinister attempt to divide conservatives, even with people using sites like FR to stir up division and hatred among us. I mean some of the things I’ve seen on here are just down-right mean, cruel, immature, and just plain ugly. My guess is that some are even being paid to do this. Possibly by the dims. Why not? Everything is fair game these days it seems. Just look at what they’ve done to Sarah. This is political guerilla warfare.

Stockpirate, that person who posted that ignorant statement is not me nor anyone that I know. Admittedly, its the worst thing I’ve seen written on here regarding Romney. I didn’t check to see if the poster was a recent member or not.

But I do believe he/she is expressing (albeit in an extreme form) the sentiment of many people who can’t stand Romney.

Time will tell. I’ll be looking to see what happens with Palin and Romney going forward. I do trust her more than him. If there is a huge wedge between them, then I will side with her.

Mormonism is an other. Not much to be done about it.

Mitt is technical. Cold. Plastic. Blah. More like Wilson.
People like GW, politics aside.

I certainly don’t forgive his statism as I knew it was coming the minute he said ‘compassionate conservatism’. I didn’t feel ‘betrayed’. I don’t feel GW strayed much from how he presented himself. Fair enough. He never came across to me as but a small improvement on his liberal father.

People know the Bush’s. Not so the Romney’s. Another strike.

This site, like most of the country is working/middle class. I don’t even think it is that rough. Further, I think conservatives, regardless of injury, don’t like complainers. You take your lumps and move on. That gets respect. Which, brings me back to Mitt. He doesn’t seem to dish it out, or take it and move on. He seems to want to please people too much. Which is the left is for ever putting others in a hole and then telling them they have to dig out that which they didn’t do. Media sensitive RINOS fall for this all the time.

I’ve never, once, seen Mitt lay down the law on anything. Listening to him I hear a ‘all sides’ Harvard Lawyer. No thanks, the GOP is already full of them.

I can not speak for others. I do not think that FR represents but a very small amount of people and would be careful in pulling any generalizations from it.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

Whenever I see posts like the one you mentioned I check their home page. Two important things to look for are sign up date and is there any info about them.

We have old trolls, paid trolls, professional disruptors etc here on FR.

I know that there are no conservatives that would not vote for a person because of the church they do or don’t attend. The reason I can say this is that position means they are not a conservative.

So, whenever you read an extreme position as that poster stated, it comes from ultra-left trolls attempting to do damage to our site and or movement.

Another thing I do sometimes is list the posters past posts to see if there is a pattern.

Some here have a list of trolls that are kept track of.

BTW - I don’t give Bush I or Bush II a pass, they are both socialist POS.

If Romney does this action, would it make him acceptable to Freepers?

Not to this FReeper. He has proven himself such a chameleon that no matter what he did or said now, I would reject him with confidence. The Romney option is like salt water being the option to a very thirsty boatload of people adrift at sea. Those who reject drinking salt water in faith that some source of fresh water will become available, at least they have a chance. Those who give in to short-sighted desperation and drink the salt water, surely die. Romney's big-government politics are salt water to a Republic in desperate need of fresh water.

If Palin does give her endorsement to Romney and campaigns for him in the primary, does this lower your view of Palin?

Indeed it would.

Everyone’s entitled to one change on a topic, when further evidence is presented.

How about one change on every topic?

No Romney.

If Hillary paid, would you then support her?

EXCELLENT comparison, ATB! Here again, a Romney supporter, by posing the question in the first place, reveals a whole lot about Romney himself and why he is such a horrifically flawed candidate.

The behavior of Romney supporters speaks volumes about their guy.

Romney supporter 1curiousmind to well-linked and informed Romney opposer Diogenesis:
You make up for in photoshop what your arguments lack in substance.

Michael Crichton wrote in his book "Travels" about a guy who, as part of a group of vacationers preparing for an ocean dive, voiced a huge fear of sharks -- obsessed over it, pretty much. When the group went diving (Crichton was part of the group), there were sharks everywhere -- above them, below them, all around them. Sharks, sharks sharks! Everyone in the group was very concerned that the guy would freak out and not enjoy the dive at all. But when it was over and they all talked about it later on, he spoke of how relieved and grateful he was that there were no sharks to spoil his dive. He hadn't seen a one of them. Crichton and everybody else was amused and fascinated.

When 1curiousmind sees "lack of substance" in Diogenesis' posts, he reminds me of that guy.
