I wore his POW bracelet when I was a little girl (10). He was friends with some neighbors of ours, and my parents met him at some party.
Then when we were down at Texas A&M watching my brother march with the Corps of Cadets, my parents saw him. They introduced me to him, and I had to shake his left hand because his right hand was in still in a cast from being a POW.
After that I had to write about one of my heroes in school, and I wrote about him.
Just last year, I found out that a friend of mine was working for him. She sent me an autographed book about him.
He is still one of my heroes!
Thanks for the link, LuvFreeRepublic, good article.
It was a childhood dream come true when, as a young bride, I rode the gentle hill country on horseback while the bluebonnets were in bloom. I have a few more exquisite memories of that great state ♥
Thanks for your interesting post, luckystarmom.
My mind is racing. :)
Thank you, Admin Mod.
Again; Congratulations to Congressman Sam Johnson, a Great American and deserving of the National Patriot Award.
Congressman Johnson (R-TX) Floor Speech (02.16.07)

Thank you for posting his speech. It will always make me cry.
I will never forgive the anti-war effort during Vietnam, I will never forgive the anti-war effort during Iraq, and I will never forgive john murtha. If God wants to, that’s His decision.
But I always and ever more shall be grateful for and indebted to Sam Johnson and all those who stand up for our troops.
As I read this post, I stand smartly at attention and give a proper hand salute to this American hero. So many have served with conviction and honor. I salute each one of them, from our origins as a country to the present day.
Thanks for linking the video of this speech, Lurkina.n.Learnin!
I want to second Ma’s post.
Your welcome. Sam Johnson has fans all the way out here in California. I wish he was my congressman instead of our commie lovin SOB.
Ditto here in NC!
Excerpted from an article by Sam Johnson in the Dallas Morning News on Sunday, May 25, 2008......
When I think about the top-notch Americans in today’s armed forces, Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham springs to mind. Jason quietly extended his enlistment so that he could remain with his Marine unit throughout its deployment in Iraq.
When asked by his younger charges why, Jason declared that he wanted to be there to make sure that all of his Marines returned home safely. In April 2004, Cpl. Dunham hurled his body on a live grenade to save his fellow Marines. He died eight days later. His parents accepted the Medal of Honor posthumously for his uncommon valor and exceptional bravery.
Cpl. Jason Dunham is a shining example of the brave young men and women who are willing to put on a uniform and fight and even die for their country in Iraq, Afghanistan or anywhere the fight to preserve liberty takes them.
Lives on hold
For the last seven years, our troops and their families have put their lives on hold, and many times on the line, to defend this great nation. Our soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen have missed many unique memories and magical moments and they continue to serve with honor and without reservation.
And perhaps more than ever, thanks to modern 24/7 communication, we’ve had unprecedented glimpses into military life.
We’ve watched emotional homecomings on TV like the time a father returning home from Iraq jumped out of a giant gift-wrapped box to surprise his children in their school gymnasium.
We’ve seen footage of servicemen witnessing the birth of their children over the Internet.
We’ve seen pictures hours after they were taken of a soldier in combat kissing a letter from home or of Marines huddled in prayer before heading out to patrol dangerous neighborhoods.
There is no telling when our military men and women will return home, but we all hope and pray it will be soon and safely when the time is right.
As a former POW, I find great comfort that Americans continue to back our troops to the hilt. Trust me when I say that it makes a tremendous difference to return to your country with a warm welcome and homecoming party vs. people spitting on you or worse.
I also find great comfort in the fact that America does not have hundreds of men and women held as prisoners of war as we did in Vietnam. For this, I can only say, Praise the Lord.
This Memorial Day, won’t you please say a prayer of thanks for freedom and for the troops and veterans willing to give their lives to protect it?
Amen to that!
God Bless Jason Dunham, his family and Sam Johnson as well as all the warriors fighting for our freedom.
I agree with you to a point. Never forget that the tax cheat boots on your neck Charlie Rangel is a Korean War Veteran; general all around rat bastards John Murtha and Jim Webb are USMC (I weep for the Corps) veterans, and John Fing Kerry is a “highly decorated” Navy Veteran.
