“And just for the record, I am in favor of strict, enforceable and coherent laws.”
These have been on the books since 1986, and NOT ONE federal organization has ever enforced them.
All of it. E-Verify, 287 [g], US-VISIT Program all exist as do employer sanctions. Take a look at the "Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986". "8 USC 1101 note", which was the amnesty bill. It contains all kinds of enforcement mechanisms including penalties against employers who hire illegals. We are not enforcing our own laws. We have sanctuary cities that thumb their noses at federal laws. What is lacking is the will, not enough laws. AZ has the toughest laws and they are working.
I am actually very hard line on immigration. I would require a lot from those granted permanent residency including monitored, bench marked progress in English proficiency, dependent performance standards in education and other items which would insure that immigrants are a positive contributor to our nation and culture.
The laws are on the books to do just that. Take a look at the 1986 amnesty bill that required English proficiency. Unfortunately, we are moving the other way by accommodating people who don't speak English by such things as ballots in foreign languages, drivers tests, etc. Spanish is on its way of become the second language of this country. By 2050, one in three in this country will be Hispanic and one in five foreign born.
I am, however bothered when I see a single minded standard applied to anyone attempting to solve the illegal alien problem. Denying practical approaches to the problem and insisting on conformance to a rigid standard is the best approach to insuring nothing gets done.
Nonsense. The failure to enforce our laws has a corrosive effect on our entire society. A country that fails to control its borders is no longer a country. I have lived in 9 different countries a total of 25 years of my adult life and visited more than 60 others. The US is one of the worst at enforcing its borders and controlling illegal populations. It will eventually distroy this country.
The problem is that there is a powerful array of interests in this country that support open borders and mass immigration, e.g., the Chamber of Commerce [an undending source of cheap, explotable labor]; the Dems [future voters: immigrants and minorties vote Dem--87% of the 1.2 million LEGAL immigrants that enter each year are minorities as defined by the USG]; the Catholic Church [more church members]; labor union leaders [more union members]; ethnic groups like La Raza [more political clout]; etc.
By 2023 half of the children under 18 will be minorities and by 2042 half of the country will be minorities. Immigration, legal and illegal, has changed the demographics of this country in a very short period of time. Demography is destiny.
“Yes, we must immediately imprison 11 million illegals in camps, then drive them on a Bataan march across the Rio.”
I didn’t even know Chris Matthews was a FReeper.
LMBO!!
I'm not a McCain fan, but I thought that was kind of over the top.
As to McCain-Feingold, Lieberman, etc., and his well known "reaching accross the aisle" garbage, I'm perfectly aware of how many times he has betrayed conservative ideals.
Well said!
Well, actually, he did help al Qaeda.
The KLA is part of al Qaeda.
John McCain armed the KLA, Politika
Get a grip. You're sounding like the lefties who bitch that the US supported Al Qaeda because we helped the Muhajadeen get rid of the Soviets.
Horsepuckey.
Al-Qaeda was well-known as the perpetrator of the first WTC bombing in 1993, the bombings of U.S. Embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in Aug. 1998, and the Bojinka Plot in 1995. All three events pre-date the U.S./NATO intervention in Kosovo, which McCain and Clinton supported.
As for KLA, their involvement in smuggling of illicit drugs and human sex slaves and in terrorist activities linked to al-Qaeda was very much known at the time.
The problem is that no one gave a damn.
Get a grip. You're sounding like the lefties who bitch that the US supported Al Qaeda because we helped the Muhajadeen get rid of the Soviets.
No, you get a grip. You're making apologies for McCain, for the Clintons (McCain sided with the Clintons at the time), and for known al-Qaeda terrorists.
As for U.S. involvement in and support of the Afghani mujahideen, it was just wrong. Washington had some choice words about foreign entanglements that, regrettably, most Americans have since ignored.
You imply we should have done something about Al Qaeda in the nineties, at the same time you call for no foreign intervention.
No foreign wars, yet it's our fault when we don't act.
Your lack of consistency or rational thought here is stunning.
Where did I advocate for a foreign intervention?
Or is that the only sort of action you can think of?
Are you suggesting we shouldn't have intervened in WW II? Are you suggesting we shouldn't have stood against the Soviets during the cold war?
The State Department apparently knew since they officially designated the KLA a terrorist organization before McCain helped arm and fund them.
