Long out of print, but James Burnham's "Suicide of the West" is also good. Some of the actors are full aware of how to exploit human nature. These people tend to attain the levers of power. The vast majority of liberals are selfish, lazy prick who are in denial about human nature.
They see their role as "protecting the sheep," not "giving the sheep freedom."
Freedom-loving people want the damn government out of their wallets and off of their backs. But there is a significant fraction of the population who sees the government as protector of the sheep, and that population votes, too.
My sense is that the country is effectively a democracy, and in the government-cycle, democracy inevitably transforms into dictatorship.
Although our nation provides for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...not being taken care of like a child.

It is my sense that the progressive take over of the reins of public education led to a shift in awareness of our founding documents and any respect for them. Which inevitably leads to all sorts of problems.

Sadly, I believe you are correct...and as I mentioned previously, I believe the subversion of public education has been in the forefront of the shift from republic to democracy mindset.
Our founding fathers understood this which is why they selected a republic and not a democracy which leads to tyranny.
But I understand your pint, and for the most part I'm right with you.
