Similar situation in Illinois back in the mid 1980s:
George Sangmeister, a major Democratic power in the state Senate ran for Lt. Governor in 1986. Adlai Stevenson III chose Sangmeister as his running mate. But in the primary, Sangmeister lost to the unknown Mark Fairchild, a La Rouchie, in the primary.
Speculation was that Dem voters didn’t like the name “Sangmeister,” that perhaps it was “foreign-sounding” as opposed to “Fairchild.”
All I said is the story about magnets has been around for years regarding computers.
Clyburn’s a Cry-Baby, and a Clymer!
Folks, it’s a lot simpler than you’re all making it out to be. The Dem primary voters thought they were voting for Al Green, the singer. I guarantee it.
He is also defeated.
But how many of the folks even knew he was black, if he did no campaigning at all? No, it’s all in the name. People thought he was the singer.
“It had nothing to do with the name, people.”
It had EVERYTHING to do with the “name”.
His name “sounded black”.
Nobody knew who Alvin Greene actually was.
They are just desperate for more conspiracy theories. If it were somehow proved the vote was rigged in this case they can say they were right about FL in 2000 and Ohio in ‘04. Make the Bush presidency seem even more illegitimate.
Clyburn is a racist old fool. Of course voting machines “played a role”. How the heck do you think people in most jurisdictions vote??????? They use voting machines. Amazing.
“Its a very stupid accusation.”

Not surprising, it was made by a very stupid congressman, have you seen the ridiculous gerrymandering they have to keep doing to get Clyburn reelected every two years? I think in some places his district is barely wide enough to make a footpath.
That doesn’t make sense, the whole controversy is about the fact that he had near zero name recognition so the voters did not KNOW his race, your statement is absurd.
Here, each party assigns someone to each precinct to oversee the voting to make sure no such shenanigans occur. I've worked at polls doing this myself for the GOP. One thing we did was have a list of registered Republicans for that precinct and, as people came in and voted, we marked them off the list. There were runners from party HQ every hour or so to pick up these lists. There were people at GOP HQ that called the ones who hadn't voted by late afternoon or so to see if they needed a ride, etc.
The Dems didn't do anything like that, at least not at the precincts I've worked at, which I thought was kind of dumb.
Now, to your point about the Dems stuffing the ballot box, I have also heard of such things happening in primarily Democratic precincts. I believe that's one reason the practice of putting a party representative at each precinct was started.
When the polls close, each representative is given an official tally by the election official in charge of that precinct. That way if there is a discrepancy in the future, there is a record of what the totals for that precinct actually were immediately after the polls closed.
SC politics are very dirty, on both sides. I think it's a combination of black people voting for anybody if he's black and his name being similar to the singer Al Greene. I'm not kidding.
