That means that they should start buy cutting the commander in chief’s pension first! Next all congressional pensions.

Yes I was in the AF, My father was lifelong Army (US Ret. and NY Army NAtl Guard), my brother is in the FBI, my son is in the NY state police, I worked for the county (as long as I could stand those lying filthy lazy stpid criminal idiots)

There is no private company that offers 20 years then retirement. Military and Government are bleeding the system dry with this.

I agree we need to attract the best- but this is not good. You are NOT attacting the best and brightest this way.

ESPECIALLY in the non-military govt jobs.

You know, where you work for 20 years and are guaranteed a ton o money, then you ‘retire’ and work as a contractor at your same job- totaling over 100K per year.

This will do wonders for ongoing recruitment and for a stable, superbly-trained career officer class.

What will happen is the officers and NCO’s who think only of the mission and the welfare of their men will leave, those remaining will be political commissars. Waiting for 2012 is too late, all three (Senate, House, and Courts) are corrupt, and that includeds both parties.

With the exception of some limited matching funds, the money in one’s 401k has been taken out of an employee’s pay. This whole thread shows that there are very few who are willing to make necessary cuts when they are just as addicted to government money as the welfare recipients. It’s always everybody else who needs to take the hit, just so long as I get to keep hitting the crack pipe of government handouts.

For the non-military government jobs I agree completely.

But in those jobs there is no REASON for a 20 year retirement; you can work until 60.

Do we want a bunch of 60 year olds waiting out until their retirement in the Military?

I have to say I agree with this- the days of “20 and out” should be LONG GONE

So you want 50 year-old guys fighting your battles, running up cliffs in 120 degree heat, doing hand-to-hand combat with a 20 year old Talibani or Iranian, jumping out of C-130s with 60 pounds on your back, pulling 9 Gs in an F-16, swimming 3 miles underwater with 50 pounds of explosives, etc., etc., etc.

Mr. K, Have you ever served? More than five years during the last 25 spent away from my wife, kids have gone to eight schools (really) and hardly know their grandparents, wife has had to change jobs at least five times, cost of moving every few years (trust me the allowances don’t cover everything) and of course don’t forget the joys of being mortared, rocketed, shot at, car bombed or staying in shape after 40. At the end of twenty years, you’re lucky if you still have a family, a good back and you’re knees aren’t blown out.

Shove a sock in it Homer.

I retired after 22 years, in the top 2% of the enlisted force.

I took my final paycheck, with all the ‘bennies’ and “extra money” in that check -

It equaled 47K/year...and in Alaska you actually get extra dough for the high cost area.

My first civlian job started at 52K/year - to start.

I didn’t mind taking the food stamps to help feed the family or the second jobs I worked to make ends meet.

Oh, and for defending this Nation, I don’t expect (or, frankly want) your thanks.

As far as the 20 and out, war is a young man’s game, if you don’t understand that - I cannot explain.

As far as choosing - If you think it was ‘for the money’ or ‘just a job’ you are cluless past belief.

Mr K if you think the system is flawed, call your Congresscritter and get the rules changed...and be prepared for the fallout.

The military ain’t WallMart

The older you get, the more you work in the management areas doing the paperwork and office stuff

I dont expect 60 year olds to be fighting battles- that would be stupid, by the same token maybe the 20 year olds should not be filing papers.

Please dont make this into a ‘i must hate the military’ discussion.

It is ALL GOVERNMENT (not just the military) that has this 20 year rule. Something you would never find in private companies.

Just about everyone who vothed against the sob knew this was coming. He is also going to destroy the private pension plans and the social security system before he is through.
How? Simply be destroying our industrail base that pays the taxes which fund the others.

The fun for those who put him in power has not even began yet. The only problem is that do not have the intelligence to realize that they did themselves in.

The logical conclusion of keeping people in longer is that they still will be fighting. Do you think the military is going to keep a thousands of geriatrics sitting around unqualified for combat but needing a job to get their retirement?

If you really want to get rid of “lifers” then be honest and come out for the universal draft. It will guarantee a young force that will only be in for two years. Of course, that means your children might have to serve.

Your experience is a story I have heard from my brothers in arms over and over again.

Thanks for putting it out there.

And thanks for your service. Just because we don't do it for the money, doesn't mean that we should be shortchanged.

You may be right.

It's tough for a lib pitting all the entitlement groups against one another.

They mostly vote Republican? Just guessing.

The Democrats don't consider a lot of things that career military folks have to live with:

Lower pay than comparable civilian jobs (My first full year I earned about $600 - 1965). Our junior personnel qualified for the food stamp program.

Moving every two years on average, and also changing schools for the kids 'way too often.

Living in high cost areas (For us Navy guys that generally meant someplace close to the ocean.)

Long deployments which contributed to a much higher divorce rate than the general public.

Not being able to visit mom, dad, brothers & sisters...essentially not getting to know them as an adult.

Not being able to purchase a home until retirement in our mid-forties....which gives us a mortgage into our seventies.

Getting shot at & spit upon when we returned from Viet Nam.

So let's see--those who put their lives on the line to defend the country = too expensive.

Those who work 9 months out of the year indoctrinating our youth to be good little socialists = no cost is too high.

What is wrong with this picture?
