Second, he wants way too much to impress people with how smart he is. In an article on punditry in the New Criterion James Bowman said that Newt apparently thought that going from Speaker of the House to freelance political commentator was a step up. It isn't and someone who thinks that way is politically unreliable.
Third, I don't know about the ideology, but Newt doesn't seem that consistent. He develops enthusiasms for whatever looks like new ideas -- global warming, etc. It's part of a desire to be ahead of the curve that goes along with that desire to impress people with his intellect. An openness to the new isn't a bad thing, but it looks like Newt is too easily won over by appeals to his vanity.
