Luana Hills is a funky Pete Dye course and can swallow a lot of balls, especially when a duffer like Barry is out hacking away.
Weirdest hole there is a par 5 (#13) 375 yds! You have to tee off with a six or seven iron to stay short of a huge ravine and then another 7 iron layup to leave a little wedge to the green. Straight uphill and visually really hard to line up where to hit the ball. Course is 6600 yds from tips and only has rating of 70.9 and slope of 136.
If Barry was a real man he would play the nearby Koo’lau Golf course which is not much longer at 6797 yds but has a course rating of 74.4 and a slope of 158. I have played both and Koo’lau is one of the toughest courses I have ever played. Cut out right against the Koo’lau mountain range, the course winds through a jungle, with ravines and dropoffs everywhere. Barry could not break 120 there if he counted all his strokes and played by the rules.
The fact he plays most of the less difficult courses on Oahu rather than the tough ones is a good insight into the POTUS. When I travel (which I have done a lot) and I get a chance to golf, I always look for the most challenging courses I can find. Even though my handicap is 12, playing an easy course and scoring well is much less satisfying than scoring a little higher on a hard course. Barry has looked for the easy path his entire life, and his choice of golf courses is no different in that regard.
